Three Democratic U.S. senators on Monday said they are introducing legislation that would require U.S. regulators to mandate installation of driver-monitoring systems to ensure motorists pay attention while using systems like Tesla's Autopilot.
Senators Ed Markey, Richard Blumenthal and Amy Klobuchar introduced the measure on Monday, saying they hope to get it included as part of infrastructure reform legislation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened 28 probes into Tesla crashes to date, with 24 pending, where Autopilot was suspected of being in use.
The measure also requires the agency "to study how driver-monitoring systems can prevent driver distraction, driver disengagement, automation complacency, and the foreseeable misuse of advanced driver-assist systems."
...Last week, Consumer Reports said its engineers were able to operate a Tesla vehicle without anyone in the driver's seat, and the system failed to send out a warning or indicate that the driver's seat was empty...
Blumenthal and Markey are also introducing separate measures to boost completion rates of auto safety recalls, require automakers to publicly disclose more early-warning defect information and set new motor vehicle seat safety standards.

I'm just grateful three Democrats are introducing more laws to keep all of us nice and safe.
Out of control government is out of control.
Can’t we just outlaw stupid people?
I’m less concerned about Teslas, then I am about all the other drivers.
Not that I want to be aggressively monitored, but a passive monitor that wakes me up before my tires cross the groves on the side of the highway might be nice.
This is story going around for years, but SUPPOSEDLY someone in an RV actually pressed the “cruise control” button on the stalk, got out of the driver’s seat, and went in the back for a snack. And that was in the transistor and vacuum bellows era. Today, we have much more sophisticated levels of stupidity.
I can certainly send this piece of human excrement a letter.
For all the damn good it will do.
I have lived my entire adult being taxed without representation in this Leftist, corrupt, immoral state.
But hey. I can write a letter.
For all the good it will do.
Coming soon...Traffic tickets issued to you by your vehicle.
With these government mandates for auto manufacturers to install spyware on vehicle I have made up my mind to buy an 1970s car and never buy new again. and she pull the cars in a longer available I’ll just refuse to buy another. They can all go to hell.
Look who’s in office.
Just figured it out, I am an Anarchist. No laws, we start over.
Actually, that’s God’s reboot plan. No law, because it’s not needed.
Jesus is Lord.
Slippery slope.
This is more regulation under the democrats. This is totally unnecessary and would add considerable cost to new vehicles.
The DemonRats are always on offense. The Republicans had literally decades to repeal or send these issues to the states but they sat on ass. I’m kind of glad this is happening because it’ll wake up people.
These 3 are probably getting kickbacks from whoever has the tech to monitor drivers.
Gee, that is a “good” idea that is already in there already. Note the plug in modules that several insurance companies have as a “savings option”, and we see the future. Just get a clue, and know they are there. People will find a way of negating or defeating this system, they always do. And thus, it will possibly defeat the purpose in the first place. More “surveillance state” idiocy.
The real “spooky” thing will be if it is someday possible, that if you make a mistake while driving, or some such excuse, and either a remote or autonomous system takes over. You would lose control, and it either stops, locking you in, so that you can be picked up by the authorities... or you wreck. Wonderful.
It's called gravel.
So it is vital drivers pay attention when the car is being driven by computer, but when there is no computer, drivers can do their makeup while in zoom calls. Great!
OMG...! Remember the Twilight Zone, where a hit and run driver has his car take control, and drives him to the police station so that he can do the right thing and turn himself in? “Spooky” alright, there matey!
