A missing Indonesian submarine has been found, broken into at least three parts, deep in the Bali Sea, army and navy officials said on Sunday, as the president sent condolences to relatives of the 53 crew.
Rescuers found new objects, including a life vest, that they believe belong to those aboard the 44-year old KRI Nanggala-402, which lost contact on Wednesday as it prepared to conduct a torpedo drill.
Margono said on Saturday that a sonar scan had detected a submarine-like object at 2,800 feet, beyond the Nanggala's diving range.
Indonesia had five submarines before the latest accident: two German-built Type 209s, including Nanggala and three newer South Korean vessels

“The Nanggala was built in Germany and joined the Indonesian fleet in 1981. It underwent a refit in South Korea that was completed in 2012 and the vessel was said to be in good condition, according to Reuters.”
I don’t know if it’s changed in recent years but most southern Asians I knew of, Indians, Pakis, etc don’t believe in preventive maintenance. They go by the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Amazing...IMO, a testament to the screening and training of the crews...
The US Navy treats Planned Maintenance like a religion, with the PMS manual their Bible.
It is my experience that the philosophy has not changed.
