It has been two years since customers were first introduced to the Popeyes chicken sandwich. Since then, every other major chain in America has been scrambling to release its own version of the popular menu item—to varying degrees of success. To be clear, most fast food joints have been offering chicken-based sandwiches for decades, but many have stepped up their game since 2019 by focusing on four basic components: thick and juicy breaded chicken breast, pickles, mayo and/or spicy sauce, and a pillowy brioche bun. Judging on those attributes, The Takeout has reviewed the major players’ new chicken sandwiches one by one. Here are the rankings so far.

Quite a few years ago, I had a problem with BK...Went drive thru...Ordered Cheese Whopper with lettuce and Mayo ONLY...
Checked it before leaving the lot and it had everything but the kitchen sink on it...
I took it inside and asked for the manager...Gave him the sandwich and told him what I had ordered...He opened it up and raked everything off with his finger and handed it back to me...REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say, he wore that sandwich home with him on his shirt....
Wife and I quit Taco Bell when they took the Fiesta and Fahita Salads off the menu...
Lol. Did you really do that. Your awesome. I would just ask for another whopper. I get the triple whopper with cheese. And switch out the fries (not that great) for the onion rings. Wish those places carried tater tots.
Totally agree.
I love those...er...tacos. And their sauce.
Are they really tacos?
I have been mad at them for years when they took the chili cheese burrito off the menu..
I’ve had one McDonald’s. It was terrible. Wife hated it too.
Four Krystal cheeseburgers is a lunch made for the Gods!!!!!
Yeah...I really did that...LOL...I was a lot younger back then...Hehehe...
I would’ve taken another Whopper but when he raked that stuff off with his finger and handed the sandwich back to me...It kinda pissed me off...LOL
#6 has a nose on it.
Amen brother. Nobody can combine the crispy coating and juicy tender high quality chicken like Popeye’s. Even the pickles and bun are top of the class.
How could that not piss you off. Rake it with your finger... seriously. That just him being a jerk. I bet his boss would love to hear what happened.
BK sucks period. I haven’t liked going to BK in 20 years. Every couple of years, when I’m on the road, I’ll pick up a Whopper at BK. It’s a real gamble. Sometimes it tastes okay, other times, I’ll want to throw it in the trash.
We were out of town so did the C-F-A drive thru since it was all the rage on FR. Nope, never again. Thankfully, the fillet, which turned out to be nuggets on a dry nasty bun, immediately fell out onto the floor. They were so bad the dog wouldn’t touch them.
A hundred years ago, Sonic’s chick sandwich was ok but it was being brought to the car by nasty car hops who had black dirt caked under their finger nails so crossed them off the list.
I eat at home. At least I know it’s my germs. A from scratch meal can be on the table faster than driving anywhere. No getting dressed. No wasting gas. No wasting time. No tipping for doing the job they were hired for.
Glad to see that Popeyes is at least as good as Wendy’s. Wendy’s spicy sammage is my favorite (I lived on them while my wife was doing chemo...there was a Wendy’s next door).
Popeye’s does make the best FF chicken though.
The best restaurant Fried Chicken I have ever had though is a toss up between Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah, and, Q’s Chicken Shack in Beaufort, SC. They are close enough in perfection that the same person may have fried them. I need to try both a few more times to be sure.
A lot to be said for eating at home...As wife and I get older, we sometimes go out to fast food just to get out of the house for change...
I really like the chicken, bacon and Swiss sandwich at Arby’s.
But, we have a local tavern that gives them a run for their money!
Popeyes is the beast!
You gotta get a hold of Popeyes. Best by a mile. I put Chik-fil-a second, mcDonals a solid third, Jack in the Box a wimpy little nothing
