Why Grape Ice Cream Will Never Be a Thing

Though there are many products where grape flavor can be welcome, such as juices, sodas, popsicles, and (of course) the actual fruit, the one place you’ll rarely find a grape is in your ice cream.

Many conspiracy theories have been floating around as to why the lowly grape has yet to make its way to the creamery, but you might find that the real reason is the simplest of all.

Let’s review.

The main idea running rampant around the Internet blames the absence of grape ice cream on the Food and Drug Administration, which banned the flavor because of pet-related hazards.

The legend goes that Ben & Jerry’s created a delectable grape ice cream which was then served to a lucky customer who loved it so much that they fed a bit of it to their beloved dog, who immediately died of anthocyanin poisoning. (Anthocyanin is a chemical found in grape skins, and it’s poisonous to dogs and cats.)

After the incident, the FDA ruled that no ice cream manufacturer may sell grape flavored ice cream.

We had grapevine we would have to block off because my dog would eat the grapes right off the vine. I fed her other grapes all the time. Never saw an issue.

I find actual pieces of fruit in deserts very enjoyable - as opposed to fruit flavoring... and when you freeze chunks of fruit it becomes as hard as rock - and unpleasant IMHO.

That’s why I never liked peach or strawberry ice cream with chunks of either fruit - too hard. And let’s face it strawberry or peach ice cream with just the flavor and pink or yellow color of the fruit taste nothing like actual peaches or strawberries...

I think fruit just works better in pies - not in ice cream - and THAT is the real reason.

Grapes do not have too much taste. Not strong enough. For ice cream, they need fruit with distinct strong taste like strawberry or cherry.
They also do unusual fruits like cactus, just for selling point. BTW cactus ice cream does not taste too good.

Finger Lakes region in Upstate NY grows a lot of wine. You can get a lot of grape products over there, like grape pies, jellies, juices, etc. I believe you can get grape Ice creams there too. Not particularly tasty. Grapes and Ice cream just do not go well together.

What they don’t tell you is that anthocyanin is only poisonous if the pooch is allergic to it! We’ve been giving dogs grapes since I was a wee lad, and not a single one ever keeled over let alone had any kidney or liver issues.

It’s a rarity that a dog dies from this type of poisoning, and they have to consume a SUBSTANTIAL amount of it to hurt them. However, if they are susceptible to the effects, death is almost certain.

And they are excellent, my favorite. Make grape soda floats all the time. Much better than root beer floats. :)

Fresh grapes are ok but can’t stand grape juice, grape jelly or grape Jolly Ranchers. Of course, the last bag of Jolly Ranchers I bought was all grape flavored except for three. They lost this customer.

That ruling makes no sense. Chocolate is supposed to be bad for dogs yet we have chocolate ice cream. Chinese made dog treats are deadly but they’re still being shipped in.

There’s an apple orchard in Medina, Texas that sells home made apple ice cream.

To. Die. For.

Our same grape-loving dog was also a regular consumer of chocolate ice cream. She lived for our ice cream nights when she could lick the bowls clean or get lost inside the empty carton. Our choices always involved massive amounts of chocolate.

Anthocyanin is found in a lot of fruits and berries. Did they stop making strawberry ice cream? Cherry? I like blueberry but it’s a seasonal thing and not easy to come by unless you make it yourself.
