A World War II era aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in the ocean during the Cocoa Beach Air Show on Saturday.
Officials said a TBM Avenger performing in the warbird parade had a mechanical issue and the pilot was able to bring the plane down close to the shore.
Rescue personnel were immediately on scene and the pilot is OK, officials said.

The zuni, fired from an F-4, hit McCains centerline fuel tank. That started the conflagration. He didn’t.
I think one question was, in the excitement, did he do something wrong, ie, pulled the bomb trigger that caused his bomb to drop. There may have been other errors as well.

Thanks for the revisionist history. Glad to see people here still know how to quote from Wikipedia. The Navy concluded that the rocket hit the plane next to McCain’s and killed the pilot. Eye witness accounts at the time contradicted the official narrative, so after all these years confusion remains.

It was McCain, not Bush, who was one of the very few Cold War aces. Got shot down in, burned up, ejected from, crashed or destroyed five US Navy jets!

Hopefully, it has been recovered and can be made airworthy again, ............................ Quick removal and a flush in order. Its a Grumman, it will fly again. I was inside one back in the late 40’s as a kid. The lower rear entry was easy for me to get into. The USNR was still flying them and the bear cats. We would have several pass byes a month. I miss the sounds of the old planes. They would usually be 2 together over head buzzing the houses. (-. ... -.-. beacon was their station.)

OK, I’ll take my beating for having the rocket hit the wrong plane in my post. Still a far cry from the version that he started it posted by so many over time.

Yeah, an electrical fault in the fire control system caused the Zuni to fire.
It was not McCain's fault.
McCain's behavior during the fire and damage control efforts to save the lives of his fellow and save the ship was beyond feckless.
He essentially ran to a safe section of the ship and turned turtle at a time when his ship mates were showing extreme courage, self sacrifice and determination in the face of extreme adversity and hazard.
This dereliction of duty was well known to the crew and shortly after the fire was under control he was evacuated from the ship for his own safety by his Admiral father.
He was shipped to Hawaii for what amounted to several months of R&R. until the dust settled

Just for general info. The aircraft was in the markings of FT-28. The aircraft of Lt Charles Taylor, leader of the famous Flight 19, lost in bad weather, pretty much off the coast of Daytona Beach in 1945. (No, they weren’t sucked into a dimensional vortex, or kidnapped by aliums.)
I have not been able to watch the video but was the radial engine running or just prop freewheeling through his “approach”?
The engine will have to be torn down regardless.
