Investigators believe Barney Harris came to Alamance County to steal drugs and money from the Mexican cartel. They say Harris and his brother-in-law tied up a cartel member before shooting him in the back of the head. A shootout began, and Harris was killed in the gunfire.
A popular Union County teacher described by family and friends as a devoted father, teacher and coach was fatally wounded in a shootout when he and his brother-in-law tried to rob members of a Mexican drug cartel, Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson said Wednesday.
Barney Dale Harris, 40, taught Spanish and was head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball and track teams at Union Academy Charter School in Monroe, according to his family and the school.
Harris was shot numerous times during what the sheriff described as an “old Western shootout” between two criminal enterprises, one of the enterprises being Harris and his brother-in-law, according to Johnson.
Officers found Harris wearing a face cover, gloves and a bulletproof vest, Johnson said.
Harris and his brother-in-law, Steven Alexander Stewart Jr. of Wadesboro, entered the home waiting for a cartel member to arrive so they could rob him of drugs and money, the sheriff said.

Partnership?
after trying to rob Sinaloa drug cartel
There's lot of money in drugs, for the supposedly good guys as well as the bad.. It's ok, it's just the democratic way of doing things nowadays...
......”Officers found Harris wearing a face cover, gloves and a bulletproof vest”.....
Guess he was ready to rumble to make the big time, then lost big time.
He went to Alamance, but never left Alamance, right?
I’d say be pissed someone off, the effin’ jerk, got on their nerves.
It's not like he was kin and had a family obligation to handle the situation.
Here comes Johnny...
Shouldn’t have looked, but now i’m just racist for thinking what i’m thinking.
The SWAT Team is too busy making No Knock Raids on random citizens and shooting dogs.
Watching too much television, they were.
looks a bit like Cleavon Little (BLAZING SADDLES)
Santa Morte (Saint death) is the “patron saint” of the nihilistic soldiers or grunts of the drug cartels. They know they are dealing death with drugs, have no reservations killing anyone and fully expect to die violent deaths themselves. They have no doubt that a short life and a violent death is their destiny. Anyone who tries to engage these people or confront them must themselves fully expect to die. Suspect this guy Harris was a customer or perhaps one of their contactors in the community, learned a little about their operation, got greedy and ambitous while high and met his inevitable fate. The cartel did not mourn him or their member that was killed. “Life” as it is just goes on.
Or would they be one and the same at this point?
You know, I wouldn’t watch that series for a long time (I didn’t have cable anyway) and then one day at work after I shaved my head for the first time, I walked in a room at work and a woman I work with gasped and said “Oh my God. You look like Heisenberg!”
Now, I was a Chemistry major, and knew who the real Heisenberg was, but completely wasn’t tuned into the show she was referencing. She had to explain it to me, and when I looked, I thought...well, I could see why someone would say that. I guess it is the bald head.
I did enjoy watching it.
Sheesh. Don’t bring a schoolteacher to a drug cartel fight.
Yes. In real life, the mild-mannered school teacher won’t get the best of Tuco or Crazy Eight.
Ain’t that the truth!
“A GoFundMe page for Harris’ wife and their three children has raised $23,130.
“He never met a stranger and the encouragement and motivation he gave both his students and athletes was priceless,” according to the page.”
Did Barney happen to mention to his students, “Don’t do or sell drugs or you might die?”
