Investigators believe Barney Harris came to Alamance County to steal drugs and money from the Mexican cartel. They say Harris and his brother-in-law tied up a cartel member before shooting him in the back of the head. A shootout began, and Harris was killed in the gunfire.
A popular Union County teacher described by family and friends as a devoted father, teacher and coach was fatally wounded in a shootout when he and his brother-in-law tried to rob members of a Mexican drug cartel, Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson said Wednesday.
Barney Dale Harris, 40, taught Spanish and was head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball and track teams at Union Academy Charter School in Monroe, according to his family and the school.
Harris was shot numerous times during what the sheriff described as an “old Western shootout” between two criminal enterprises, one of the enterprises being Harris and his brother-in-law, according to Johnson.
Officers found Harris wearing a face cover, gloves and a bulletproof vest, Johnson said.
Harris and his brother-in-law, Steven Alexander Stewart Jr. of Wadesboro, entered the home waiting for a cartel member to arrive so they could rob him of drugs and money, the sheriff said.

I bet he won’t try to rob a cartel member again.
Heisenberg?
“...taught Spanish...”
THERE’s your problem, right there....
And he's all out of money.
This is what happens to people that watch too much tv. They get the wrong ideas.
If they knew the cartel was here...why are the cops not stomping their ass?
Well, that is something.
“...entered the home...”
Was this home mobile?
I think there may be more to the story. story.
He was an African American. He would blend in in Mexico.
I guess it is one way to spend spring break.
Great job, Alamance County, on hiring folks to educate your youth, not that any other locality does a better job. You will reap what you sow.
So he felt good watching the tv programs and thought he could feel even better making drugs in trailers, trying to be like the guy on HBO.
I know a guy who retired after 40 years of factory work. To make a few extra bucks he decided to become a drug courier, and run heroin up from Florida to New York - I found this out only after he was killed.
Anyway, one day they found him and his car on the side of the road somewhere in the Carolinas. He was shot dead. I guess someone really wanted whatever he was carrying.
Bottom line: If you’re looking to make a few extra bucks, don’t mess with drugs or drug cartels. Go get a job at WalMart.
I fought the cartel, and the cartel won.
Too bad. It's still a CoVid death.
He should’ve driven down there in a 1976 Caddy with a 500 ci powerplant and an M60 in the trunk.
Running drugs you've got the cartels willing to kill you for them and authorities willing to hang you. Not exactly the best way to earn extra income.
Yeah. Sounds like these guys couldn’t tell Sinaloa from Shinola.
Surviving brother in law is going to have to join a gang in prison to have any chance of not being whacked by the Latin gangs.
