Thought perhaps some might enjoy this. It's a comedy routine about cloud computing.

I can’t believe people voluntarily decided to trust putting their company data in unknown locations, on somebody else’s computer.

Where is “the cloud”?

If you think your data might not be safe on your computer,
why don’t you just store it on mine???

That’s very cute. Once you get used to the Australian accents and the canned laughter, the ‘lady guest’ has some very good points.

I remember when the cloud first came out, when is go to professional seminars they were always pushing it. Why? I thought. Seemed like a terrible idea.

Brilliant.

I don’t live in the rarefied world of those who think they need ‘The Cloud’ - but you can buy a 10TB external hard drive that would serve most average peoples’ purposes for a couple or three hundred dollars...

The main reason we went to PC’s was to get away from “mainframes” where every thing was stored in one spot.
Some seem to have gone full circle.
I own 6 or so computers. Most run Linux and I store my data
locally, it is cheaper than the “Cloud”.
I’m a retired software engineer. Don’t ask why I have so many computers. But I won’t get hacked.
My VA, Credit card, Credit bureau, Retirement plans, et al companies have been “hacked”. The “cloud” is not your friend, Firewalls are.

Just think some rogue nation gets a hold of one of the many cloud instances of say AWS or Azure which host Amazon, Walmart or any financial entity or such. Could be the largest data breach ever with all kinds of ransom like you would not believe.

But that can't happen so don't worry about it.

So, voluntarily is not necessarily the case. Some software makes it hard to choose anything other than the ‘cloud’. In those instances, use another tool. Truly.

I bought my first mini "home lab" computer this very day (a Dell Optiplex 7060 with 32G ram and 1T NVME SSD). Cloud has proven to not only be more costly, but also less performant. I'm anxious to get Proxmox installed on this thing and start stacking up LXD and Docker containers.

I'm already starting to think I may need another.

In addition to Cloud wearing thin, I predict the same for SaaS.

It’s stupid, which are usually the ideas that are pushed with the most vigor.

Yeah, I hate products that want to make decisions for me, and I really really really hate products that want to make bad decisions for me. Another non starter for me is software subscriptions.

Lots of money involved is why. Billions in fact, if people buy into it, and like the sheep that most people are, they bought into it, hook, line & sinker,

She says it's "out back of Google."
