12-year-old praised for honesty!

BARRIE, ONT. -- When 12-year-old Alana Bauer found a large amount of money while delivering papers in Orangeville, she knew exactly what she wanted to do with it.

The Grand Valley girl saw the money on the sidewalk and tucked it away for safekeeping while continuing on her paper route.

When she returned home, she told her mother she wanted to take the money straight to the police station to give the owner the chance to reclaim it.

"I just knew it was the right thing to do," she said.

Dufferin OPP commended the young girl's integrity and recognized her actions with a small token of thanks in the form of an OPP teddy bear and water bottle. "Alana was not looking for any recognition for her honourable actions," police said.

They also extended thanks to the girl's parents for "instilling a moral compass well beyond her years."

The OPP is now hoping to reunite the money with its rightful owner. Dufferin OPP says the owner can contact them at 1-888-310-1122 to reclaim their lost property. The owner will need to specify the exact amount lost and the approximate location where it was found.

If not claimed within 90 days, it will be rewarded to the 12-year-old girl who didn't hesitate to bring it to the police.

Shove it in your pocket and shut your mouth.

Why throw good fortune into a ditch?

She was smiled upon by the money gods and spat in their faces.

Since I’ve moved to Spain I’ve found 2 wallets and a flash drive loaded with someone’s personal information. One of the wallets had 150 Euros in it, the other no money. I took the flash drive to our insurance agent’s office so the secretary (who was also a friend of ours) could put it in her computer and see if she could figure out who the owner was. The wallets I returned by calling the number on the credit card and having them contact the owner. We didn’t stick around for the flash drive but the lady said that when the guy came to collect it he didn’t so much as say thanks. Same thing with me for the wallet I found with the 150 Euros in it, which it turns out was owned by a former judge and law professor who owned the biggest house in my area. Of course the one who thanked me was the lady who had nothing. I told her I found the wallet that way so she didn’t think I ripped her off and she said there wasn’t anything in it when she lost it. She didn’t even know it was missing when the credit card people called her.
When we were fairly new arrivals in Spain we went to a beach and when we were walking back out we saw a man who was walking in front of us drop his phone out of his backpack. We picked it up, caught up to him and returned it. We’re walking along, this time in front of the guy, and he grabs my arm and starts jabbering on about his wallet. Apparently he was thinking we stole the phone and wallet, kept the wallet and returned the phone to avoid suspicion. I thought we were going to start fighting and we kept trying to walk away. We got some distance between us when he started rummaging through his backpack again but he ran up to us again, this time to show us his wallet. No apologies for accusing us of being thieves, he was just happy he found his wallet.

This sounds like it could wind up being a lottery lol.

I’ll take “near the bank, and $12,000.00”.

Or.....

A less than honest cop could get the “winning” information to a friend for a 50/50 draw.

years ago as a poor young man I was walking home two or three days before Christmas when I found five dollars on the ground in the parking lot of the mall I worked at. I was struggling financially and thought how fortunate I was. I then proceeded to ask god if he could send me a little more money this being Christmas time.

Five minuids later walking home I glance down and spotted an envelope envelope. I bent down and picked up the envelope inside 500 cash. I felt luck tand immediately thought of what I can do with the money.

I then looked at the out side of the envelope and discovered on it 4 Spanish names and after each name 2-3 words I could not totally read but thought they might be Spanish names for difrent toys.. I then realized that my finding this money was not a gift from god it was a lesson.

Finding this lost money meant that a parent was not going to buy Christmas presents for there kids. I started home with my brain stuck on the fact that I had found 5 hundred dollars and was not happy about ending up with it.

About 10 minutes later I see a young woman crying and looking in the streets gutter. I ask her if she lost something. She speaks to me in Spanish a language I dont speak. I have no idea what she is saying but assume I assume that this envelope is hers. so I hand it to her and her reaction is one that tells me I am right.

Lesson of this incident is that finding lost money is not a blessing from god it is a responsibility and duty given to who ever finds money.

The only money that is ever yours is the money you make by the sweat and toil that you do to earn it.

Very wise words.

Out in Ca one time on a business trip I found a wallet in the parking lot. I managed to contact the owner when back in the hotel. Later I met him in the same parking lot and he wanted to give me a $20 as a reward which I refused. He was Hispanic but the odd thing was he didn’t seem too happy about getting his wallet back and reacted as more annoyed than anything else. I walked away feeling kinda weird from his reactions. Hey whateverrrrr hombre.

I once found a single dollar bill.

I kept it. I might be evil.

I like your story and would have done the same because you got to return it to the owner.

Taking it to the police...? I’m not so sure about that.. I think I’d try to locate the owner myself.

I was in a bar and found $200 in the ATM - I asked around until I was pretty sure whose it was.. I handed it to the guy and said “that couple over there said you were the mast one to use the ATM - is this yours? He said yeah she took it.. Not only did he not thank me - he didn’t even interrupt his conversation to make I contact with me...

Well, it IS a blessing from God, in that we get a chance to do the right thing. But yes, it is a duty.

One time I was riding my bike, and ran over a ten dollar bill. I was making $3 a week on my paper route (about ten hours of work). I told no one. Those were good times.

My siblings and I would study at the city library after school.

One day i found $3.50 in change at the copy machine. This would have been in 1967. I turned it in to the front desk. Three months later. a librarian stops me at the desk and gives me the $3.50, no one had claimed it. I was rich !

Years back in a subway tunnel, I was walking a good distance behind a black guy and saw him drop his wallet. I called out to him, he picked it up and he continued to walk. No thanks for me. Must have been a racist.

Last year, I was in a self-checkout line and the woman in front of me had apparently requested cash back, and she started walking away just as the machine spit out the cash. I called out to her, she took the cash, and thanked me multiple times. I guess that made up for the other guy.

Those who think that found money is a gift from “the money gods” apparently have a different God than I do.

I was working at a big golf resort back in the 80’s and found a wallet w/ $7,500 cash in it that belonged to a Japanese hotel guest. No one knew I had found it and no one would ever know if I kept it.

At the time I was saving to buy a house and thought how much the money would help. I knew I’d give it back to the owner, but hoped for a few hundred dollar reward and many good meals and rounds of beers w/ my friends.

I called his room and he came down to the golf shop where I gave it to him. He was very nice and thanked me, but didn’t give me a dime.

My friends all said I should have kept it because he was a “stiff” as we used to call them. For a moment I even thought I should have kept it. Then I realized that if I did and had bought that house, I would be reminded every day that I didn’t earn it w/ my own money.

If it’s not yours, you have to give it back. That’s what my folks taught me growing up.
