Panel: Japan Needs More Offensive Firepower to Counter Chinese Ambitions

The China Coast Guard’s aggressive behavior around the Senkaku islands, Beijing’s build-up of coastal military capabilities and this weekend’s transit of a People’s Liberation Army Navy carrier strike group near Okinawa underline Tokyo’s need for its own offensive military capability resources, a leading Japanese security expert said Monday.

Masafuma Iida, head of the America, Europe and Russia Division at the Japanese National Institute for Defense Studies, said the threat China poses now is a “very severe reality” that requires “Japan [to] acquire more offensive capability.” He called for the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force to have a long-range precision strike that could target Chinese coastal bases and ports as a deterrent to future aggression.

Speaking at an online forum of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, he added, “we need more deep-rooted cooperation with the United States.”

Iida suggested the cooperation starts with “a common objective [policy] to Chinese assertiveness.” Specifically, it would include more joint exercises covering all domains and shared intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance on China and its activities in the East China Sea.

They’re gonna need more people, too

Japan clinging to Xiden like a scared child as China gets ready to roll all over East Asia - truly the last kamikaze mission for the Japanese nation.

New century, new realities. The ultimate and most logical targets for China are the Russian underpopulated and rich Pacific coast possessions and the vast treasure house of Siberia. Japan fears eventual Chinese retribution. The natural alliance would be between Russia and Japan. America’s logical and strategic line of defense lies much futher east in the Pacific with the Western boundry defined by Wake, American Samoa, Midway. Very much doubt China will atteck Taiwan but will attempt a Hong Kong style peaceful type voluntary reunion.

Yes, Japan has a withering population. However, do not underestimate their wealth, technology, and manufacturing capability.

The mathematics of war are changing rapidly and those three things can make any nation who possesses them a formidable foe.

I predict Japan will re-arm in the next 5-10 years. Article 9 has been under pressure for a while now and I won’t be surprised when it’s completely abrogated.

Japan needs a nationwide force field and EMP weapon that can disable any invading missile or plane within a limited region.

You are right, India needs to be brought into the fold as they are the bulwark against any attempt at Chinese territorial aggression. So would Russia but the American left screwed that up over the last decade first by showing them our asses as they invaded Ukraine and (sort of) Syria. Then with their constant drumbeat of “Putin the diabolical man” who cheated for Trump and is a “killer”. It was a big mistake to push Russia towards the east and south when they have more to gain, and more culturally in common with the west. Not saying their government is perfect, but they would be better to work with than against.

Japan is a tough one. I can empathize with their decision not to build an army designed for offensive capabilities.

If Japan were smart they would develop numerous squadrons of stealthy, pilotless drones that would make a sea based invasionof Japan impossible. Stealthy, hard hitting drones that can be launched from cruise missiles, planes and submarines as well as land bases have made suface combatants and armor formations obsolete. Technology has altered combat realities beyond the perception of most senior officers in the world’s armed forces. Many young, brave men will die horrible deaths before the new realities are understood and appreciated.

Ironically, our two biggest allies in Asia against China are the two Asian countries we most recently fought: Japan and Vietnam.
