One in three people who overcome COVID-19 suffer from a neurological or psychiatric diagnosis six months on, according to the largest study so far published on the mental toll that long-COVID takes on survivors.
Authors said the research, printed Wednesday in The Lancet Psychiatry journal, proved that COVID-19 patients were significantly more likely to develop brain conditions than those suffering from other respiratory tract infections.
Studying the health records of more than 230,000 patients who had recovered from COVID-19, they found that 34 percent were diagnosed with a neurological or psychiatric condition within six months.
The most common conditions were anxiety (17 percent of patients) and mood disorders (14 percent).
For 13 percent of patients the disorders were their first diagnosis of a mental health issue.
Incidence of neurological disorders such as brain hemorrhage (0.6 percent), stroke (2.1 percent) and dementia (0.7 percent) was lower overall than for psychiatric disorders but the risk for brain disorders was generally higher in patients who had severe COVID-19.
The authors also examined data from more than 100,000 patients diagnosed with influenza and more than 236,000 diagnosed with any respiratory tract infection.
They found there was overall a 44 percent greater risk of neurological and mental health diagnoses after COVID-19 than after flu, and a 16 percent higher risk than with respiratory tract infections.
Paul Harrison, lead author from the University of Oxford, said that while the individual risk of neurological and psychiatric orders from COVID-19 was small, the overall effect across the global population could prove to be "substantial".
"Many of these conditions are chronic," he said.
"As a result, health care systems need to be resourced to deal with the anticipated need, both within primary and secondary care services."
'Severe impact' Patients hospitalized with severe COVID-19 were at great risk of developing long-term conditions, according to the analysis.
For example, 46 percent of patients who needed intensive care were diagnosed with neurological or psychiatric conditions within six months of recovery.
The data showed 2.7 percent of people needing intensive care suffered a subsequent brain hemorrhage, compared to 0.3 percent of people who weren't hospitalized.
And nearly 7 percent of those needing ICU care suffered a stroke, compared with 1.3 percent of patients who didn't.
Writing in a linked comment article, Jonathan Rogers from University College London, said further research was needed on the long-term neurological and psychiatric outcomes among COVID-19 patients.
"Sadly, many of the disorders identified in this study tend to be chronic or recurrent, so we can anticipate that the impact of COVID-19 could be with us for many years," said Rogers, who was not involved in the study.
"It is clear from this study that the impact COVID-19 is having on individuals mental health can be severe," said Lea Milligan, CEO of the MQ Mental Health research group.
"This is contributing to the already rising levels of mental illness and requires further, urgent research."
Take this article with several grains of salt. “The most common conditions were anxiety (17 percent of patients) and mood disorders (14 percent).” Neither anxiety nor mood disorders are true mental illnesses, they are naturally occurring human conditions that can not be cured except by spiritual means.
I survived COVID and I can tell you I have psychiatric problems. Thing is, I had them before COVID. I have AADD and OCD and I like to drink beer every now and then. I am manic depressive except i am hardly ever depressed. I am schizophrenic except that when the voices talk to me I can’t understand them. That is a problem for sure.
The problem is that there has been so much deliberate false information spread about this virus by those who are supposed to be working on our behalf. Thus it is very easy to dismiss any panic sounding stuff they come out with because they’re such proven liars. And it makes it very difficult to sort out the bits and pieces of truth that they apparently accidentally include.
Bioweapons can have that effect...
BS. The anxiety and mood disorders were caused or exacerbated by the lockdowns not the virus.
Anxiety? Mood disorders?
Couldn’t POSSIBLY be from government mandated isolation and job loss, huh?
I am usually a skeptic. Doesn’t matter. My skepticism is usually merited.
I think a lot of this research is self-serving.
“The most common conditions were anxiety (17 percent of patients) and mood disorders (14 percent).
For 13 percent of patients the disorders were their first diagnosis of a mental health issue. “
This is called a meta analysis— it is NOT a clinical study. The incidence of these “symptoms” are nearly the same as those seen after traumatice recover from serious influenza/pneumonia/pulmonary collapse. ANXIETY being the #1 treated “psychiatric-disorder” in the US ...from ANY CAUSE. The number 2 overall prescribed pharmaceutical agents in the US are for.... ANTI-Anxiety and Anti-Depressants.
This “study” says absolutely nothing— except the MASSAGING of data to add on another “OH NO” to the CHI-COM stolen components (from US and from Edmonton- public fact on Chinese agents captured by US federal authorities- headed to Wuhan with vials of biohazard biologics from Level IV labs- Chapel Hill, NC and Edmonton, Alberta. FACTS.) which were weaponized at the Wuhan PLA Bioweapons facility, then tested on Uighers at the major labor/murder camp on the Mongolian Border. It worked- killed 65K from the sulfur dioxide smoke columns analyzed by US spy/NOAA satellites estimates.
Typical fashion the chi-com idiots infected themselves. Patient zero was detected in Guandong (500 mi. from any “wet market” in Wuhan... that lie doesn’t wash), by our own CDC personnel who were thrown out of China. Matter of public record. The virus was then to be employed in BOTH Hong Kong, and Taiwan— to defeat anti-Communists in HK and prelude to invasion of Taiwan. They failed with Taiwan. But for some unknown reason the US Navy USS Roosevelt (of the Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group) was arranged by US STATE DEPT. for a “Port of Call” (including shore leave from the carrier) at DaNang, Vietnam. The sailors got infected by covid 19 and the nuclear armed/powered carrier was docked for weeks in GUAM and the idiot commander announced the stand down of a fighting carrier group to the entire world through San Fran press LEFTISTS. Assymmetric Chi-Com warfare achieved.
So— now more dribbling propaganda— to continue the PSYOP of the chi-coms through...media for US “science”. This is fraud, and criminal 5th column stuff.
We are at herd immunity. The only true preventive vaccine is the J&J vector model— prevents infection not just reducing the symptomatology and effects of infection as the Pfizer, mederna and astra zeneca m-RNA models.
The Hiden Biden admin continues their partnership with the chi-coms who OWN them... in perpetuating this crapola. Listen to Johns Hopkins— if they will ever let their info get out properly.
I haven’t had it but I’ve developed a “mood disorder “ every time I go in a store and have to wear a mask.
With the amount of panic porn out there in the media telling you, you have to wear a mask even though you’ve had your vaccinations or that if you’ve had covid, you can still pass it on to others.... The new variant that pops up every day...
All of the chances you might have to get it again, I’m wondering why the percentage isn’t higher.
I would agree with that. Over 20 years ago when I first started having heart issues my levels of anxiety and apprehensiveness were quite significant. It took me a couple years to sort out the whole thing emotionally and not walk around waiting for something to blow.
Logic does not always alleviate worry when it comes to health issues. Matter fact it doesn’t help much at all for most of us.
And in this case there could very well be a physiological basis for it.
For example some pts who had undergone open heart surgery and were placed on a heart lung machine come away with a “pump head” syndrome due to the bypass machine as well as the possibility of anesthesia contributing to it. Same thing with some pts who just get anesthesia.
For example my friend never had anxiety issues..now he does. With covid, as I mentioned, some pts can have a hyper-coagulation state that may cause micro emboli of clot that may migrate to certain areas of the brain. These areas may be areas that can help contribute to potential mental disorders that the OT never had previously. It can be seen as analogous to mini TIA’s.
So if a patient who never had any mental disorders/anxiety BEFORE the illness and now they do that begs the question what caused it?
I come at this due to my background on healthcare as a perfusionist, medical devices for heart support and ECMO, which Covid pts have used greatl, which all entail knowledge of blood coagulation. So I am not speaking from no experience her.
If you have been quarantined, locked down, and social distanced for a year I think anxiety and ‘mood disorders’ are pretty likely.
I thought that The Lancet had long been discredited....especially after their retractions.
The folks I know, who had China virus a year ago....and, within the past six months....are recovered, completely, and are doing fine. No residual effects.
And, they’re all still cranking out antibodies.
It does happen to some, l’m one. I’m 67 overweight but no other health issues. I’m not on any meds. I came down with the virus the third week in January and am still recovering. The things that still effect me, although much less now, is forgetfulness, lack of concentration, endurance, and shortness of breath. I figure it will take another 4-6 weeks to get back to where I was, but that is just a guess.
If they are democrats then 3 out of 3 of them had psychiatric problems before they got covid.
Mood disorder.
I am stealing that.
My disorder is here highly distructive.
Depends on where they lodge. They can also cause mood disorders too...again depending on where they lodge and do their damage
Why is it so hard to get C-19 antibody test? Like millions of others I think I have had COVID ( twice ) already but not really sure.
How many people without covid who have been living like human lab rats wearing stupid masks and being force fed a year worth of fear porn have similar neurotic and psychiatric problems?
