Larry McMurtry, a prolific writer who wrote mostly about the American West and who won a Pulitzer Prize for the sweeping novel "Lonesome Dove," died Thursday, according to a family spokesperson.

He was 84.

Amanda Lundberg confirmed the writer's death to NBC News on Friday. McMurtry died of heart failure at his home in Texas surrounded by his loved ones.

Over half a century, McMurtry wrote almost 50 books, including novels, screenplays, essay collections and memoirs that were predominantly set in the West. Several of his early works became feature films, including Oscar winners "The Last Picture Show" and "Terms of Endearment."

Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, McMurtry drew heavy inspiration for his novels from his time growing up on a ranch.

He was 25 when he wrote his first novel, “Horseman, Pass by,” which examined the changing values in the West after World War II. The book inspired the film “Hud” starring Paul Newman two years later.

His epic 1985 novel, "Lonesome Dove," which focused on a cattle drive from Texas to the Great Plains, was later adapted into a popular television miniseries that starred actors Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover and Diane Lane.

The four-part television series earned many accolades, including 18 Emmy nominations and seven wins.

Lonsome Dove is one of my favorite all-time books. Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call two of the greatest characters ever written. RIP Larry McMurtry.

I loved the mini-series too.

Casting of Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones...brilliant!

Favorite scene: when Woodrow Call's son is being cuffed around in the street as he tries to keep the Scout from taking the horse...

“Lonesome Dove” is the best thing I’ve ever seen on TV. Nothing else comes close.

Most famous line by McMurtrey in the woke era: “I wish I could quit you”.

The remarkable thing about the mini-series .... first time & only time (for me) that the characters totally fit the characters in the book .... their ‘look’ was just what I was picturing as I read the book. One of my all-time favorite mini-series, if not THE favorite.

Mine too. I read Lonesome Dove and a sequel and a couple more of his novels.

I saw the miniseries before I read the book. I thought it was outstanding, thanks to Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, two terrific actors.

Yes. Best mini series ever, maybe best TV ever. Could be best “screen” Western ever, up there with Liberty Valance, High Noon and some Eastwood films.

When I was on vacation reading the book in the tent when the kids were young they wanted me to stop reading it before bed and early in the morning because my involuntary laughter either kept them up or woke them up. Great imagery.

Raylan Givens:
Okay, the police are gone. I saw you talkin’ to the officer, duckin’ his eyes. Whatever you felt like you couldn’t say in their presence, now you can.

Glen Percy:
Sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Raylan Givens:
Stop. Glen, I don’t want you to speak anymore. ‘Cause once you start lyin’ to me, there’s going to be a river between us with no bridge to cross. Do you understand what I’m sayin’? Nod if you do.

Glen Percy:
[nods]

Raylan Givens:
Okay, good. Start again.

Never saw brokeback mountain, but from the press, and the way fags loved it, I doubt I would have liked the author.
