The remarkable thing about the mini-series .... first time & only time (for me) that the characters totally fit the characters in the book .... their ‘look’ was just what I was picturing as I read the book. One of my all-time favorite mini-series, if not THE favorite.

If you're looking for a foreign film that does the same, get the Russian version of ‘War and Peace,” probably the best epic film ever made and one that adheres scrupulously to the original novel.

The only other times that the filmed version matched what I had envisioned while reading the book were “To Kill a Mockingbird” with Gregory Peck, and Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster (though Stephen Fry was all wrong as Jeeves).

I think I liked Larry McMurtry’s books set in the 20th century better than the ones set in the Old West, except for “Lonesome Dove”. That was just simply a great book.
