The first test of a project backed to spray millions of tonnes of chalk into the stratosphere, in an attempt to 'dim the sun' and cool the Earth, could happen in June.
Harvard University experts will test the system by sending a large balloon 12 miles above the Swedish town of Kiruna and have it drop 2kg of chalk dust into the stratosphere.
The aim of the estimated $3 million mission, backed by billionaire Bill Gates, is to have the chalk deflect a portion of the sun's radiation, stop it from hitting the surface, and cool the planet.
The idea has been heavily criticised since its inception, with project director Frank Keutsch even calling the need for this scale of geo-engineering 'terrifying'.
And experts have warned that the unusual technique could be disastrous for weather systems in ways nobody can predict.
Backed by a range of private donors including Gates, the test mission is launching from Sweden as they could offer a launch by the end of this summer.

A lot goes to striping ballfields. When striping a very small football field in our backyard years ago, we used ash from the wood stove. It was free and served the purpose well. We used a coal bucket to carry it in. One evening it was getting too dark to play, and the dew was setting on the grass.
But just before quitting, I was running toward the sideline in an attempt to tackle (ha, actually just push him down) my 10 yr old son near the sideline, slipped on my last adjustment, and landed just out of bounds,... breaking two ribs on the coal bucket. Didn’t miss any work at the steel fab shop, but work was a real pain for a couple weeks.
I will say it....what is smart about putting particulates in the atmosphere at a level that it impacts the amount of sun light we get....seems to me that bill gates is saying we should pollute the atmosphere and degrade the the planets troposphere with a pollutant.... he has no idea what he is advocating for.

Coupled with the many volcanic eruption data there is enough information to form preliminary conclusions about the weather effects...unlike the pissant "2 kg sack of flour equivalent" Gates intends to release.
So why is he doing this and why above Sweden? Well Kiruna is the home of Esrange, a sport port for satellite and balloon launches for research. Hmmm... seems as though similar research projects might already have been undertaken.
At first blush this sounds like an alternate backstory in Tom Clancy's "Rainbow Six" in which a billionaire efforts to reduce the worlds population by first globally dispersing a highly contagious and fatal virus at key transportation nodes...inducing global panic...and then offering up a vaccine that really is the coup de grace to the human race...can't help but think that maybe we're already part of Bill Gates'narrative.
What he says they'll be releasing may not be what is actually to be released. Might be interesting to check atmospheric patterns, especially wind currents...who know where those might lead.
