The first test of a project backed to spray millions of tonnes of chalk into the stratosphere, in an attempt to 'dim the sun' and cool the Earth, could happen in June.
Harvard University experts will test the system by sending a large balloon 12 miles above the Swedish town of Kiruna and have it drop 2kg of chalk dust into the stratosphere.
The aim of the estimated $3 million mission, backed by billionaire Bill Gates, is to have the chalk deflect a portion of the sun's radiation, stop it from hitting the surface, and cool the planet.
The idea has been heavily criticised since its inception, with project director Frank Keutsch even calling the need for this scale of geo-engineering 'terrifying'.
And experts have warned that the unusual technique could be disastrous for weather systems in ways nobody can predict.
Backed by a range of private donors including Gates, the test mission is launching from Sweden as they could offer a launch by the end of this summer.

And covering the poles with oil and coal to darken them!
I’ve got a great idea - let’s introduce rabbits into Australia! (Oh, wait . . . never mind - let’s go back to pretending we can terraform Mars)
Some talc contains asbestos. Johnson’s Baby Powder is a talcum found to have it.
He is a megalomaniac and lunatic.
It’s time for the rubber room and a straight jacket.
Simpsons Did It
LOL—that would work. Sign me up!
Ice Ages suck. The greatest killer of life on earth were the ice ages. Geo-engineering of the earth is insanity. Oddly Bill Gates plan might be feasible.
And fifty years ago such idiots wanted to mine coal, grind it to dust and spray it on the glaciers to stop THE COMING ICE AGE!
Bu then, another one is already on the way!
“Flying 100 planes all the time which would constantly dump dust.”
Bill - we’re going to need a bigger plane.
If he is only talking 100 planes I don’t think we have much to worry about. Even if it goes on “forever” that dust won’t stay in the air forever. (Maybe if they get it WAY up there it will???)
Mount Saint Helens emitted about 540 million tons of ash into the air. It was bad to be downwind, but I don’t think there was any change in the climate.
I see where a 747 cargo plane can carry 125 tons of stuff. That would be over 4.3 million flights!
“Chalk dust.
Great for the lungs.”
But we’re all primed for it by wearing masks for the past year (2 weeks to flatten the curve). Welcome to the new normal. It’s probably going to suck for other life forms, though.
I want to see Gates show his math on the loss of power produced by solar panels if this idea was put in action. How much nat gas, coal and nuclear power would be required to replace the lost solar energy?
Also, would winds decrease as a result of this action? Would hurricanes and cyclones increase or decrease? What about lightning and thunderstorms? Rainfall and snow amounts? Floods or droughts? Would we have to take more Vitamin D?
So many questions arise...
Idiots. The will spend 3 million dollars for a balloon drop of chalk at 60,000 feet. A Mig 29 could be hired to do if for less that 100,000 dollars.
How about just taking a million old blackboard erasers up there and smacking them together repeatedly.
That should do it.
Seriously, these people are bat crap crazy.
Combined PING! and DANG!
“Would we have to take more Vitamin D?
Future Headline: “Covid-36 Kills Billions due to lack of Vitamin D”
(Of course that would be a benefit in Gate’s mind.
Someone needs to lock that sumbitch up.
Sure, man-made dust in the air will not cause a nuke winter situation and spiral into a new ice age. I hope this is tabloid fiction but sadly this is not the first time I have heard this @&$*.
“Disastrous” as intended.
I actually LIKE the idea, as then we can get back to burning fuel. I also like the approach taking on the problem, rather than cowering in fear and shutting down our country...which is the only alternative now that Democrats run everything.
2 kg!?
That’s what - 5 pounds!?
And at an altitude of 63,000 feet, I’m guessing the wind is pretty vigorous up there.
