Some weeks ago, Pat Frank suggested that I might consider writing an essay about the efficacy of masks and mandates to wear masks during this pandemic. I hesitated doing so at first, but March 8th I noticed another research effort on the part of the CDC to justify masks as a prophylactic strategy.[1] This effort seems very deficient in my view and so this essay resulted. What I write here is a summary of a much larger work in progress.
Lincoln Moses and Frederick Mostellar long ago suggested that public policy be organized as experiments so that we might learn of its effectiveness, or lack thereof, and avoid successive failures.[2] When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived last spring, I wrote that we didn’t need to go through successive battles with exponential processes, but that we appeared not ready to gather useful data and evidence about the effectiveness of social distancing and other advice in this battle.[3] Considering the tendency of people to don a mask against all sorts of bad air is so universal that even screen writers employ it to add realism to a disaster scene, one would think we would know something about their effectiveness.[4] We do and we don’t. While I am told by some people employed in medicine along with many amateurs that masks are essential to controlling spread of SARS-COV-2; highly reputable authorities, many of them, thousands of them, make much more modest and even opposite claims.[5]

Great article. Thanks for posting.
Happy 1st anniversary of “15 days to slow the spread!”
Come take a look at the journey we’ve been on this glorious past year.
Right. The masks don’t do anything, but if you’re sick, you should stay home. It used to be common sense. Now, people think a magical mask protects everyone from everything. It’s infuriating.
It would take long to run its course....My wife was a first grade teacher...
Flu season half the class was our sick and the other half were in class sick
This is a topic being discussed all over the country by everyone except TPTB.
I’m an anesthetist and have worn a mask in the operating room for 18 years
I couldn’t agree with you more: masks are useless to stop viral transmission and are actually harmful.
........
Do masks have any effect on how much of virus is exhaled or inhaled?
Most people are either going to be vaccinated. Or will have gotten the virus and survived just fine by spring so there will be herd immunity. Masks will not be needed (they never really were except for the elderly and sick perhaps, as the virus is 99.98% survivable for. Most folks)
A simple mouthwash with a certain ingredient is capable of rendering the virus innefecfive at causing illness in Under 30 seconds. Colgate total mouthwash is one with the Ingredient. And it is effective for up to 6 hours even after brushing teeth or eating. This simple ingredient likely would have been very effective at stopping transfer of virus through breathing sneezing coughing, and would have protected the others who also used the wash,, in A room, even if some virus did manage to escape through sneezing or whatever.
And you wouldn’t have to worry about touching your face like you do with masks. As the ingredient is in the mouth and will stop the virus from going any further should you happen to touch face before washing hands guess what they took off the shelves immediately right at the beggining? A nasal spray with the same ingredient in It- to study, you know
Fortunately they did not remove the mouthwash
Does it work? Quite possibly, tests show that it renders the virus incapable of infecting in under 30 seconds, and it coats the mouths where most get the virus from, and likely is much more effective than masks ever could be considering how jnnefectively most people use them
Rather ain’t that the trut just look how fast most people not just complied, but became snitches and social karens. This truly was an example of just how fast and near,y completely a dictator can take over and squash anyone that doesn’t comply. Even big tech, science, and social sites all got in on it. It is shocking how many jumped on the “please dominate us” bandwagon
Sorry I meant BROTHER AINT THAT THE TRUTH. Dang autocorrect said RATHER instead doh!
Thanks for the post. There is something to the mouth wash; I am sure that it does help to prevent the spread much more than the masks ever could. Our dentist makes us use it right before working on our teeth. But the only simple way to prevent the spread of a virus is to not be in contact with others... at all.
Viral particles are almost unimaginably tiny and the infection is not just in your mouth but throughout your body. So sorry you are being overly optimistic about a mouth wash's effectiveness at stopping the spread of a virus.
As you have noted however a sizable percentage of the population have chosen to take the experimental vaccinations and a sizable percentage of the public has already been exposed multiple times and fought it off whether or not they became symptomatic. Plus there is more and more evidence that a sizable percentage of the population already were immune through past exposures to pathogens that were similar to this one. So it was basically going away regardless of the huge government overreaction and in some cases despite of it.
Yup dentist’s have been using it for a long time now. They know it works. The one they use is called dental mouthwash or something like that, but it has the same ingredient as the Colgate one , the ingredient I thjnk is cp, cetyl something I think. I keep a bottle of it in car. And use it before going in anywhere.
If it works, fantastic, if not, oh well, my dragon breath briefly smells better
[[So sorry you are being overly optimistic about a mouth wash’s effectiveness at stopping the spread of a virus.]]
Wow, I didn’t say it woj, would, stop a pandemic, I simply said it I probably far more effective than masks at stopping the spread. Masks won’t protect your eyes, ears. Not even your mouth or nose, as particles simply go around. The mask into the openings as you move around.
The mouthwash coats the entire mouth and traps the virus and makes it innefective at I felting the person through the mouth the major route of infection. They do even have. Nasal sprays that do the same. Some made with Stevie beleive it or not., and one could. If they were so inclined, den coat the nose with the mouthwash, as it doesn’t contain alcohol and doesn’t burn. Though I wouldn’t recommend it.
[[ But the only simple way to prevent the spread of a virus is to not be in contact with others... at all]]
While true we can’t go through life iso.ated. so we do the best we can to try to avoid the virus while having to interact with others. The mouthwash is a good first step. Nasal sprays that stop covid a good way too. You can find a couple of them online. If folks like, the wash plus a mask and nasal spray will be a good approach as the mask will “cut down” on the amount of virus getting through, but really, it’s pretty innefecfive. But all three together might help the vulnerable quite a bit more than masks alone.
Most however are gonna survive it just fine and have natural immunity to it. I personally think the numbers claimed to have died fro covid are overblown. Many being labeled that shouldn’t have been. How many? Don’t know. But this virus hit nursing homes very hard, and I thin, that is where the bulk of factual covid deaths came from. Not all of course, but much of them.
For me it was about a year ago. ;)
Very few elevators in this part of Florida...................
Excellent article.
I delved into the math of the latest paper offered by the CDC. It’s very inconclusive. They don’t publish enough actual data to confirm their analysis.
Masks have some value to protect say the elderly making quick grocery store raids once a week or so.
Their effectiveness goes down as exposure time rises.

From my past knowledge of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) it selection and limitations I can assure you that the masks that most people are wearing have almost no or no protective value for the wearer or those around them. For most they make it more likely that they will become ill not less, especially older folks.
I know two elderly people who became very ill this year from pneumonia... one of them died, the other has permanent lung damage. Both were habitual mask wearers. The heavy mask use was blamed in both cases for making each of them more vulnerable to catching pneumonia. It will eventually be confirmed that the masks killed far more people than they saved.
