From shiny multiplexes to opulent indies to that one around the corner with the sticky carpets and the slightly stale pick ‘n’ mix, the spectrum of cinemas is a mile wide – and we miss them all. All of them are sanctuaries for movie lovers; places to go dream and be transported.

With so many still shuttered, it’s time to celebrate them in all their infinite variety. So join us for a globe-trotting tour to the most glamorous, architecturally eye-popping, Insta-friendly and just plain drop-dead-gorgeous cinemas on the planet – the ones you’d go out of your way to visit. Pull up a red velvet armchair, foot stool and fancy cup holder and take a trip to the world’s most beautiful cinemas.

50. Grand Lake Theatre, Oakland Known for the opinionated messages that regularly grace its marquee (owner Allen Michaan is very vocal about politics), the Grand Lake Theatre is a remnant of a more luxurious age of moviegoing that’s been remarkably preserved. Depending on what movie you’re seeing, you’ll be seated in the expansive main auditorium (home of the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, played before select screenings), a desert-themed Egyptian auditorium or the tiled Moorish-style theater. As beautiful as the decor is, the prices are what get folks through the doors: matinees are less than $7 and all tickets are $5 on Tuesdays. Zach Long

Put it on the poster: The custom rooftop sign above the Grand Lake Theatre is one of the largest of its kind, made up of 2,800 bulbs that are typically lit up on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Hopelessly lost to restoration due to regs on removal of asbestos and lead paint.

>>Enjoy your loneliness :(<<

Move theaters provide social opportunities? You are supposed to be totally quiet an NON social at them! There are no more breaks mid-movie so afterwards you leave.

I am not alone — theater chains are dying. One of them did not make it through the pandemic (cannot remember which one).

My wife and I just do not socialize much. We mostly avoid people but we do like live productions and are looking forward to going to the theater and concerts when they start performing live again.

"Today you can get as good or better picture and sound at home, without paying $100 for a few popcorns and cokes."

Yes. Ultra High Definition (4k) TV prices are dropping quickly. They are like looking through a window and they upscale everything. We've had a LG for a couple years and still comment on the amazing picture. It has wi-fi to connect to a router and can stream everything - plus additional features.

As for surround, depending on size of the room, you can get a complete system for incredibly low prices nowadays. Best Buy has some of the best deals and a salesman that will configure a system according to your needs/wants and budget. We haven't been to a theater in years.

“We haven’t been to a theater in years.”

Same here. Last one was “Marley and Me” (just got a Marley looking dog 1 year ago). TV...haven’t watched in 8+ years. Mostly ALT media now or pluto on demand.

We had a nice surround sound system in the big loft area...sheesh that’s been gone for 10+

If we still had those movie palaces (and good movies to watch) I’d probably go to the movies more often.

I remember as a kid, maybe 8 or 9, going to a movie theater for the first time with a small town church group. The theater WAS a palace as far as I was concerned, coming from a really poor rural place in Mississippi.............

That man I mentioned was Tom Coburn....He was a Doctor..OB Doc...delivered a lot of kids. I know a couple people that worked with him thought he was an ass.

I worked with a Surgeon in SoCal...that most nurses thought he was an ass.

Him and I got along just fine...and I am not an ass. And he was never an ass to me...

I'm just a dude with some letter's behind my name....

Coburn just wanted things the way he wanted them.

So, did this SoCal surgeon...Dr. Miller.

Anyway..Coburn..saw the "reach around" crap between the parties...and was disgusted by it...He tried to change it..but was pissed about it.....He quit and...then died of Prostrate CA.....

Thanks. I remember the Doc. I always liked him (from my distance and not knowing much about him). I did not know that he had passed.

R.I.P. Tom Coburn. Whoa. Times sure are a changin’

Not a single county in WV voted for Plugs the Pedo or the Butcheress of Benghazi, either.
