From shiny multiplexes to opulent indies to that one around the corner with the sticky carpets and the slightly stale pick ‘n’ mix, the spectrum of cinemas is a mile wide – and we miss them all. All of them are sanctuaries for movie lovers; places to go dream and be transported.
With so many still shuttered, it’s time to celebrate them in all their infinite variety. So join us for a globe-trotting tour to the most glamorous, architecturally eye-popping, Insta-friendly and just plain drop-dead-gorgeous cinemas on the planet – the ones you’d go out of your way to visit. Pull up a red velvet armchair, foot stool and fancy cup holder and take a trip to the world’s most beautiful cinemas.
50. Grand Lake Theatre, Oakland Known for the opinionated messages that regularly grace its marquee (owner Allen Michaan is very vocal about politics), the Grand Lake Theatre is a remnant of a more luxurious age of moviegoing that’s been remarkably preserved. Depending on what movie you’re seeing, you’ll be seated in the expansive main auditorium (home of the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, played before select screenings), a desert-themed Egyptian auditorium or the tiled Moorish-style theater. As beautiful as the decor is, the prices are what get folks through the doors: matinees are less than $7 and all tickets are $5 on Tuesdays. Zach Long
Put it on the poster: The custom rooftop sign above the Grand Lake Theatre is one of the largest of its kind, made up of 2,800 bulbs that are typically lit up on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Thanks for posting. There sure were some in downtown Detroit. Back when the “willing suspension of disbelief” was fascinating. We were children once, playing with toys. Nostalgia BUMP!
I remember when going to the movies was special treat and people dressed appropriately....................
bkmk
Today you can get as good or better picture and sound at home, without paying $100 for a few popcorns and cokes. That is not counting being able to pause the picture to hit the restroom and being able to talk to friends and family while NOT having to listen to strangers talk to theirs.
I have not been to a movie theater since 2010 and even before then it as maybe once a year or less.
Oh! it was a major event!
And like everything else the left has touched, they have shat upon them.

Same for flying.
Enjoy your loneliness :(
Great clubs too.
How they dressed never bothered me but the cellphones and non-stop talking and being general azzholes did.
I stopped going around 1990 when I got out of the Navy. It was nice going to the base theaters.. quiet, respectable and you stood for the National Anthem before the movie started.
Beautiful chairs don’t have cup holders.

Same with flying.
Then both industries took to treating customers like cattle.
As one would expect, those are some of the most austere and ugly theaters I’ve ever seen.
Now the real estate is either worth “too much” so they are torn down, screens are subdivided and the theaters are turned into multiplexes, or the slanted floors are filled with cement and they are turned into restaurants or grocery stores, or they are in rundown neighborhoods and sit derelict or they are turned into churches.
Not all of them.
Imagine “being there” on the big screen.
The Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit was missed. Perhaps because it is primarily used for concerts & shows now.
The Projector, Singapore
Repertoire cinemas can be interesting but the interior of this one has been “modernized” (2014) and from the photo of the interior looks like a typical multiplex in my town. I can’t call that “most beautiful cinema”. But it’s like those “50 greatest rock guitarists of all time” lists or “the best 100 albums of all time” in Rolling Stoned magazine, they HAVE to list some contemporary bands so the modern audiences feel connected and that they didn’t “miss out”.
Chairs without cup holders are sticky chairs...
