The Volkswagen ID.4 Is A Disappointing Electric Car (For Now)
Engineering Explained ^ | 3 Mar 2021 | Engineering Explained

Posted on 03/06/2021 8:12:26 AM PST by DUMBGRUNT

Volkswagen says the ID.4 is their most important vehicle launch since the Beetle. That's big shoes to fill! This long-range all electric vehicle is competing in a highly sought after market, and America's latest crave: the crossover. The ID.4 features 250 miles of range with a 82 kWh battery pack (77 kWh useable), 201 HP and 229 lb-ft of torque, and RWD. The permanent magnet synchronous motor spins up to 16,000 RPM!

It all sounds very exciting, but unfortunately the ID.4 feels like it has come a bit short on the promise of bring "electric cars to the millions, not the millionaires." Even with the $7,500 tax credit, the starting price of nearly $40,000 is still a tad high. Especially considering the AWD variants will easily push to $50k with options. But the bigger disappointments come from the current charging system: Electrify America. You'd think charging and navigating a VW on VW's own funded and created network would be seamless, but for now, it's anything but. Check out the video for all the details.

-—”What ever bacame of the VW concept car that predated the ID.4?”

Called the ID 3.

Jan. 19, 2021 WSJ:
How Volkswagen’s $50 Billion Plan to Beat Tesla Short-Circuited
Faulty software set back a bid by the world’s largest car maker for electric-vehicle dominance

...The car, however, didn’t work as advertised.

It could drive, turn corners and stop on a dime. But the fancy technology features VW had promised were either absent or broken. The company’s programmers hadn’t yet figured out how to update the car’s software remotely. Its futuristic head-up display that was supposed to flash speed, directions and other data onto the windshield didn’t function. Early owners began reporting hundreds of other software bugs.

... Tens of thousands of ID.3 owners will have to bring their cars in for service to have the new software installed...NEVER HAPPENED!!!

Volkswagen, the world’s largest car maker, has outspent all rivals in a global bid by auto incumbents to beat Tesla....
What they didn’t consider: Electric vehicles are more about software than hardware. And producing exquisitely engineered gas-powered cars doesn’t translate into coding savvy.

NB: VW IS PUSHING THEM OUT THE DOOR (2019) TO AVOID MASSIVE PENALTIES /AS PART OF DIESELGATE MANY OF THE PROBLEMS HAVE NEVER BEEN REPAIRED.

The ID.3 is gaining traction, outselling Tesla’s Model 3 in Europe in December, according to Jato Dynamics, with sales fueled by a price tag that is about $12,000 less than Tesla’s model, and by Germany’s decision last year to increase incentives for EV purchases. The ID.3 has also garnered negative trade-press reviews and is still missing key feature

MBA’s will be studying this for many years and tattoo key points on their wrist.

Heads are still rolling and this article is a year old...

PS: the ID4 STILL lacking over-the-air updates...

GAY.

ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

First recorded in 1275–1325; Middle English gai, from Old French “happy, cheerful,” from Germanic; compare Old High German gāhi “fast, sudden”

But when you’re on the road? How long do you have to wait around to charge; then too, finding a charging station before the battery is dead.

A Tad high, is what this guy calls a $40,000 car. It’s still a EV and has to be charged . When is the expansion of the Grid going to start to support all this new Electricity demand?

And where is the energy needed to build these cars going to come from?

In the same link as above #57:

The charging strategy starts at about 7:20.
A bit complicated.

That said, IIRC you work as a commercial pilot, much simpler than the usual preflight planning.

My wife’s cousin flys for a major and she is quick-witted, you should have no problems.

When is the expansion of the Grid going to start to support all this new Electricity demand?

Current EV sales are ~2% of US sales.

For most of the USA, daytime peak loads are TWICE the nighttime loads.
Excess nighttime capacity, and all but peak days; plenty to go around.

Not to worry.

I wouldn’t own one, at gunpoint. My 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee HEMI V8 is too much fun

As a fellow Jeep Grand Cherokee owner, are you as pissed off as I am about Jeep kowtowing to the left and changing the name?

Wrong, if even the move to EV’s are slow the day comes when a lot of people plug in to recharge. Green energy polices will not work. All power generation planning is done years in advance. Either you start planning now or there will not be enough energy to go around.

No it isn't that recent. I did more searching and I'm guessing it is the L1 which I'm not sure why it didn't take off. It actually pre-dated the XL-1 by 7 years... For some reason I thought the VW I was thinking of was a white and black color sort of like the BMW i3 but maybe my brain is fading from too much information...

VW L1 Concept

I can’t imagine they’re going to do it. I hope not. Who knows? I’ll be really pissed-off if the bend over and grab their ankles.

Between the F-150 Twin-Turbo 4x4 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, guess which one is leaving my garage if Jeep changes the name?
