The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Replace the broth with flat beer and it is a Wisconsin soup.
We can see the grass in our lawn! Not all of it - but a lot of it! Yay!!!
Sounds like a good plan. Lettuce can tolerate temperatures down to 28 degrees, so cover them up if it’s going to be colder.
You might want to look into a cold frame. They’re easy enough to put together, and will really extend your season in the spring and in the fall.
It doesn’t have to be this fancy, but here is the general idea:
https://www.growveg.com/guides/how-to-make-a-cold-frame-step-by-step/
And, even though you didn’t ask, my favorite books about growing year-round and/or in cold climates and short growing seasons are by authors Elliot Coleman (Barbara Damrosh is his wife, she’s good too!) or Niki Jabbour.
We own a Palram brand. 8 x 12. $1,200.00 plus some expense for additional gravel. Labor was free; Beau and me, LOL! Beau made a gravel pad for it, and he staked it down about 2 feet into the ground.
Wind has done two things: one day I forgot to close the roof vent and we got a 45 MPH wind from the East, which is rare for us. We sited it because our weather/wind always comes from the West! Took the roof vent right off and bent it up but good. Still need to replace it, though Beau made a wooden cover for that ‘hole in the roof’ that I take out in the Spring - but I also have to be sure I don’t have anything beneath it that isn’t flood proof. ;)
Then, this past fall - same problem, but with the lower panel in the left-side door. Beau hunts from July through November, so isn’t home much. I patched it up with a sheet of styrofoam and some Duct Tape. It’s held all winter. I have the panel, and that wasn’t cracked or bent, so when it gets a little warmer, we can easily fix that.
Otherwise, it hasn’t blown away, though it easily would were it NOT staked down as well.
We added shelving from scavenged cat-walk aluminum on cinder blocks. I can add another layer of shelves if need be, but haven’t needed to so far.
All in all, I love having it. :)
My petunias and snapdragons are germinating, having sowed the seeds last Sunday in my BioDome. By next weekend I hope the pentas and pansies are also up. Shoveled tons of snow out of the new greenhouse floor today, and from around the outside edge of the framing. Need it to dry out. Snow nearly 2 feet deep in places. Could not just wait for it to melt. Need to get the polycarbonate on ASAP.
Cheers for warm and sunny days!
LOL! Kind of of odd, Hey?
I used two Jiffy flats that held 16 Jiffy plugs each, and I could fit NINE more plugs in the recycled salad greens container I was using, so I did! :)
My ex had OCD so bad it was maddening in SO many aspects of our lives. “Why the h#ll isn’t this working? Oh, right. You most likely UNPLUGGED it on your ‘Crazy Safety Rounds’ today!” *Rolleyes*
However, I DO feel for Monk and everyone else like him in this world! Close enough has always been good enough for me. ;)
This is a great thread for those who know nothing of gardening- not just those who are experts. That’s great for me and anyone else who just want some result from their efforts.
(To the point, it occurs to me that I may have missed a playfulness in your reply.)
Gonna suggest those fish to Mom for her Koy Pond. She raises VERY EXPENSIVE racoon snacks!
The car crash reminded me of some DOLT that stopped dead in the center lane, being nervous about her exit to the right. I hit the brakes, turned on my flashers and braced for impact, all in a matter of SECONDS. It never came, THANK GOD!
LOL! No, they’ll just grow a bigger onion. You can cut off the greens as you go and use them as you would Green Onions of or Chives. Double Duty! :)
Wait a minute...YOU had an EMPTY POT? LOL!
You could start your own lettuce indoors in a BioDome. I bought one and sowed seeds (flowers) last weekend, and half of the species I sowed are up already today.
website: parkseed.com
search “BioDome”
I got the double one, holds 2 trays of 40 plugs each.
They sell a single one too.
The double BioDome was not much more money than the single.
Very sturdy plastic. I’m very pleased with my BioDome.
It lets me start slow growing seeds indoors now (Wisconsin).
Lettuce is easy to grow from seed.
Park Seed sells that too, naturally. ☺️
Last weekend we watched Girls WIAA Basketball and this weekend it’s the Boys, and The Wisconsin Cheese Cartel has been a sponsor and I want to make ALL of their recipes!
So, your suggestion is a good start!

Nice! Jealous of your pruning! My fruit trees are just starting to produce at 3-4 years old.
Of course, at my ‘other’ farm of 25 years, I had it all. ;)
That carpeting reminds me of flying back HOME to Wisconsin after spending 4 months in SC for Army Basic Training and then AIT (Advanced Individual Training).
That leg between Chicago and HOME was so BEAUTIFUL with all of the fields awaiting harvest.
*SIGH*
God Bless America! :)
I know! Beau saw some patches of grass and said, ‘Ma! Fire up the mower! You got work to do!”
.........great web site....such innovative recipes.....thanks........

Here is what we did-it was a prefab kit- One side is the sunroom with a table and chairs for coffee or tea-hot even in winter when the sun shines.
The other side is for starting plants - But it’s often too hot during the day, and too cold at night. Ya gotta regulate it. We were going to put in an automatic thing to open the vent, but first crack out of the box, the wind blew the window off and now that leaks.

Voles also like rose bushes too, mostly the roots!
I think This year I’m going to try a Fox product. Already has mycorhiza in it. I also use something to prevent Damping off.
I generally start things like tomatoes and peppers in wet paper towels in baggies. It gives them a head start I can “proof” the seeds and see if they are viable!
I know what you mean about spring; I start to feel alive again!
(Say Bonjour to Messr. Chouteau! :)
I also bought a hummingbird feeder last year post season. When should I start putting it out with sugar water? Do I need flowers around it to attract hummers?
