Dutch writer Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, who won the International Booker Prize in 2020, has withdrawn from a project to translate Black American poet Amanda Gorman's work following a backlash against the commission.
Rijneveld, who is White and non-binary, announced they were to work on the project with publisher Meulenhoff on February 23, only to say they had handed back the commission three days later.
"I am shocked by the uproar around my involvement in the spread of the Amanda Gorman's message, and I understand the people who feel hurt by Meulenhoff's decision to ask me," wrote Rijneveld.

So if this Gorman uses poetic techniques from Europe is that cultural appropriation??? She is black not a white European....
“non-binary”?
And who cares what his skin color is, so long as he does a good job?
Talk about systemic racism!
“I understand the people who feel hurt by Meulenhoff’s decision to ask me,”
He understands their racism?
The use of “they” when referring to a single person is just wrong.
Exactly, they should go back to speaking with click noises.
What in Sam Hill is non binary? Please , help me!
Who else makes up the “they” that the story refers to?
whoops...I misread it (I think).
If this is how it is going to be, I would be quite content never to read, look at, or listen to an artistic contribution from blacks for the rest of my life.
I am outraged that Gorman has appropriated the White language of English, instead of reciting her poems in Swahili or Zulu.
There is a black literary translator in Dutch? That seems unlikely. There are probably few enough Dutch literary translators as it is.
Its not enough to understand both languages.
Since I am neither black or woman I can ignore her....
I really don’t care what negrophiliacs want and will actively boycott any of their works.
WTH does race have to do with the ability to translate a book?
Not man enough to be a man, and not woman enough to be a woman.
Simply "identify as Black". Problem solved.
Well, Homer was blind, so hopefully the Iliad and Odyssey won’t be canceled.
“Rijneveld, who is White and non-binary...”
“Non binary...relating to, using, or denoting a system of numerical notation that does not have 2 as a base...”
Good for her.
I took “non-binary” to mean she is some sort of undisclosed sexual pervert. Could be wrong.
