That thing is his mouth cost him 10 years of his life, at least. Was it worth it? That was for him to judge.

He also smoked cigarettes. Higher risk for lung cancer than cigars and pipes. Or so I’m told.

I know cigar smokers claim they do not inhale. But my neighbor always had an UNLIT cigar in his mouth, never saw him without one. He got mouth, tongue, throat cancer and died. I know tobacco can kill. Could be the chemicals used curing the tobacco leaves, I don’t know. But it is not a good healthy thing to do, smoking.... I tried to talk a good friend into quitting smoking, she didn’t want to stop. She passed away young. My grandma smoked a lot and had a stroke and died young. My uncle, though, smoked at least two packs a day for about 80 years. Died at 91, lung cancer. Didn’t develop it till age 90. He was unusal case.

But I still think the most dangerous thing I do every day, even more dangerous than covid, is being out in a moving vehicle. They are so dangerous. Especially in winter time.

“That thing is his mouth cost him 10 years of his life, at least.”

More likely the cigarettes he smoked for decades. Of course, the cigars didn’t help.

You do not know that. Don’t be a presumptive idiot. Plenty of people who have never smoked a cigar have gotten lung cancer.

A good friend of mine smoked all day long for years. When the first grandchild arrived, she quit cold turkey — too late. Fifteen years later, breast cancer, then heart attacks, then strokes. She died at around 55 years old.

Ozzie Nelson for one; never smoked or been around smokers but yet died from lung cancer (or so I’m told).

That is so sad. Smoking is so bad for our lungs for sure and cancer spreads. I saw a billboard years ago with two lungs pictured on it. One was bright pink, one was black. A healthy lung and a smokers lung. I decided right then I do not need to smoke. I used to be able to smoke one cigarette once a year with an old friend. I noticed it made me crave another one. I don’t know what they are treating tobacco with but it is much more additive than it was in the 1950s, 60s, etc.

Ozzie started out as a bandleader, which means that he was around smokers, considering the era.

You know what, I have noticed that. My mother in law’s brother died of lung cancer years ago, not a smoker. Recently a good friend of mine, met her in early 1970s, passed away, stage 4 lung cancer. A NON SMOKER. And she was healthy, had healthy lungs, or so we thought. She never lived where there was pollution...

But no one is an idiot here.

I love the picture. I lost 3 close friend since Christmas. At least I still can listen to Rush replays, for now... The saddest loss was our friend who died suddenly while PG with first child. Baby survived. Young father left to raise her alone. They have been together about 20 years. We went to their wedding. They waited till they were finally ready to have a child, they had bought a house, etc. Did everything right. Then Amy’s heart just stopped. They rushed her to hospital but after many weeks in hospital she passed on. I cry a lot these days. I think the tears will eventually cease. Right now I am in mouring for Leona Bauer - our pastor’s wife. Marji Sebesta - a friend since about 1973. Amy - she was like family. and now Rush. I hope thise death count stops. Only ONE was covid.

The largest cohort of lung cancer is Chinese women.

They cook with oils in poorly vented rooms

Smoking isn't the only cause of lung cancer although a major one. Anything that damages DNA in your lungs will increase risk. Dustin Diamond who also died of lung cancer two weeks before Rush, didn't smoke either. Neither did Andy Kaufman. Only about 10% of lifelong smokers will develop lung cancer over their lifetimes. That's because cancer development is a long complicated process ("oncogenesis") and a number of things have to go wrong over a period of years before cells turn cancerous. Being a smoker just gets the ball rolling.
