The Plan to Rear Fish on the Moon
Hakai Magazine ^ | 22 Feb, 2021 | Chris Baraniuk

To boldly farm fish where no one has farmed fish before.

The seabass eggs, all 200 of them, were settled in their module and ready to go. The ground crew had counted the eggs carefully, checked each for an embryo, and sealed them tightly within a curved dish filled precisely to the brim with seawater.

The countdown, and then—ignition! For two full minutes, the precious eggs suffered a riotous shaking as the rocket’s engines exploded to life, followed by another eight minutes of heightened juddering as they ascended to the heavens. These embryonic fish were on their way to low Earth orbit. Next stop: the moon.

Well, they haven’t actually left yet. But after a recent simulation designed to re-create the intense shaking of a typical takeoff, researchers in France found that the eggs survived the ordeal well. It’s a crucial discovery in the progress of the Lunar Hatch, a program that aims to determine whether astronauts could successfully rear fish on a future moon base.

Rear fish seems like an odd turn of phrase.

Pete Buttigieg is managing the effort.

They would need to take some ACME Instant Water - just add water.

“The moon is not zero gravity, it’s low gravity”

Granted, and they might adapt to it, it’s all in the name of science..er..research grants...right?

(Still chuckling about upside down fish)

Maybe they could raise sole that were shaped like regular fish.

On a more serious side. They would have to perfect some sort of perfluorocarbon solution maybe in the form of a hydro-gel.
It’s my unqualified opinion that the gel matrix would help absorb the stresses of the launch.
Reentry, however, could be aided by some lemon/pepper and a side of cornbread.

I think is was comedian Stephen Wright who said, “I bought some powdered water at the store. Got home and couldn’t figure out what to mix it with.” Sounds like a government problem.

Someone on another thread put it this way: Schools are now teaching gender and black studies rather than correct English.

When I read some of the 'rubbish' written by journalism graduates, I am inclined to agree.

Agree.
The product of a Moon base should be ethanol, oxygen and food.
Fish would play a very minor role in any responsible economy there.

How do you intend to get the necessary protein for a colony up there?

Seems the intent is to create a saltwater aquaponics system.

Why not make the deserts green on earth and farm fish right here?

As a source of protein or a lunar colony they’d be better than chickens. They are already acclimated toa weightless environment.

The goal is a self sustaining colony on the moon.

Fair question.
The economy of a Moon base is built on plants: their food value for humans, their oxygen production, their ethanol production, and their food value to protein sources.

Hope that’s clear.

Excess ethanol and oxygen is exported for profit (hope the settlers don’t drink up their profits!) .

HaHaHaHaHa. Are you serious? There will never be a colony on the moon independent of earth. “Sustainable” ring a bell? Tell me you are serious, please....Hogwash...
