Now those, I don’t remember! Or I was so young I don’t remember. But I have heard of them.
Also the old style of having the letters at the beginning of the number; I think it was called telephone exchange names? BR-549 on Hee Haw is an example. Heard of them but never used them.

At least you two don’t remember operators placing your calls. Yes, in my small town we had operators placing calls for most the time I was a kid.
If you knew the operator, you would end up having a conversation with them before they connected you. Most of the times you didn't could just tell them to put you through to the other person's name without using the number. And the operator would listen in to the calls, as would other people on the party line.

I’ve been pondering...where I lived back when party lines were a thing, was outside a military base. We might have had a party line but I didn’t use the phone, and my mother is deceased so I can’t ask, but I wonder if maybe we didn’t have party lines so people couldn’t overhear any type of military info. Loose lips sink ships, and all that. Fort Bragg is home of the 82nd Airborne.
