A bubonic plague outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen several dozen people succumb to the long-feared disease, which caused Europe’s Black Death pandemic in the 14th century. Multiple cases of the plague were identified in the Biringi area of Ituri Province in northeastern DR Congo between November 15 and December 13, Anne Laudisoit of New York-based NGO, Ecohealth Alliance, told AFP.
At least 520 people have become ill and “more than 31” of them have died, Ituri Health Minister Patrick Karamura told the outlet.
The vast majority of cases involved bubonic plague, with the exception of five instances of pneumonic plague and two instances of septicemic plague, which occur when the disease spreads to the lungs or blood, respectively.
Younger people were most affected, with the average age of patients being only 13. Among those infected was a three-month-old baby, according to Laudisoit.
The plague, which is caused by Yersinia pestis bacterium, is endemic to the province where it was first confirmed in 1926. Outbreaks occur regularly, with the World Health Organization (WHO) also issuing an alert over spiking cases of the disease in Ituri’s Rethy region in July last year.

While all three spread the same batería, the difference is the mode of transmission. Bubonic plague is spread by animal bites, pneumonic plague thru airborne droplets. It goes person to person and is much more deadly. It’s what made the Black Death so nasty. There are usually no swollen lymph nodes, called “buboes” hence not bubonic plague.
No, white people aren’t immune. They may be more likely to survive, and a genetic variant that gives better plague survival also gives better HIV resistance. But not all white people have the variant, and it doesn’t confer immunity.

If those rats acquire plague bacteria carrying fleas, watch out. Growing up in India, I have seen large rats as well, but their numbers were not large. Cats kept their numbers down. Never heard of plague in India, but I was attacked by the smallpox virus at age 8 and almost did not survive according to my mother. Now still very healthy past 80 with daily exercise in the gym on treadmill and light weight lifting. I rarely see anyone over age 70 in the gym, which is a shame. I am now convinced, daily exercise gives us the best chance to live longer in good health.

We get cases in New Mexico yearly here. The rodent population carries it. It came over from China on trading ships in the late 1800s. Easily treatable with antibiotics if caught early enough.
More particularly, younger black people were most affected, showing the disparate impact it has on the black community, while the privileged white society is much less affected by the plague - no white victims! Firm evidence of systemic racism in the Congo!

“European” isn’t a race. You mean Caucasians who stretch from Ireland to India and include north Africans and Arabs.
“White” is a misnomer. Finns and Estonians and Russkies have a lot of East Asian genes.
