A bubonic plague outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen several dozen people succumb to the long-feared disease, which caused Europe’s Black Death pandemic in the 14th century. Multiple cases of the plague were identified in the Biringi area of Ituri Province in northeastern DR Congo between November 15 and December 13, Anne Laudisoit of New York-based NGO, Ecohealth Alliance, told AFP.
At least 520 people have become ill and “more than 31” of them have died, Ituri Health Minister Patrick Karamura told the outlet.
The vast majority of cases involved bubonic plague, with the exception of five instances of pneumonic plague and two instances of septicemic plague, which occur when the disease spreads to the lungs or blood, respectively.
Younger people were most affected, with the average age of patients being only 13. Among those infected was a three-month-old baby, according to Laudisoit.
The plague, which is caused by Yersinia pestis bacterium, is endemic to the province where it was first confirmed in 1926. Outbreaks occur regularly, with the World Health Organization (WHO) also issuing an alert over spiking cases of the disease in Ituri’s Rethy region in July last year.

Europeans (white people) and some other races are the progeny of ancestors that survived the plague. We’re mostly immune. There was an outbreak in San Francisco back around 1900, but it was in Chinatown.
I think Captain Trips is more dangerous than COVID-19. And the plague.
And if we don’t cower enough to Covid, will they import the BP?
I can't keep track... am I merely supposed to apologize for this aspect of white privilege? Or does this one demand reparations too?
Bubonic Plague is treated with streptomycin.
It’s not a virus; it’s a bacteria.
Bubonic is easily curable with modern antibiotics.....
The only reason these people are dying is that they are in the Congo where medical care is sparse...
We still have cases of it in the US, usually in the SW US, and is associated with either a home rodent infestation or close contact with a groundhog community.
In the US it’s not outbreaks but usually “one-offs”.
Having traveled in Central Africa...and having been given a tour of Tanzania’s largest hospital...I’m astounded that anyone in that part of the world can live past the age of six months.
This is an annual event.
That’s one consequence of open borders.
After all, Biden is fine with releasing 25,000 illegals onto the streets of the U.S. without COVID testing while telling US we need to wear two masks until 2022.
You know, I'd hardly call those five instances of the bubonic plague spreading to the lungs or blood "exceptions." I'd say that all of those cases, without exception, involved the bubonic plague.
Regards,
We need to bring in as many Bubonic Plague refugees as possible doncha see?
When I was in basic training I got a bunch of vaccines but I don’t remember what they were for.....
Plague is a result of poor garbage disposal policies which breeds rats. That is why more prosperous countries avoid diseases like BP. The rats harbor the fleas which are infested by the plague bacteria.
You got shots for The plauge, smallpox, jungle fever, the yellow flu, malaria, diptheria, typhoid, lockjaw, and I think We got rabies shots too.. lol. Should have gotten shots for the brown bottle flu too, but I think they were basically totally non effective.
Southern California and other remade areas look to be changing that.
The travel restrictions need to be kept in place or expanded.
ashley judd was there recently...🤔
Those people can’t catch a break!
