As record-breaking cold swept across Texas this week, millions of people were left shivering in the dark as the state’s power grid failed to meet the surging demand for electricity, crippled by temperatures in the single digits.
So why does the power continue to work in places like Wisconsin, where bitter cold is a way of life? The reason is simple: Generators in the Upper Midwest are designed to work in frigid conditions, unlike those in Texas.
“We designed all our infrastructure for these bitter-cold temperatures,” said Paul Wilson, a professor of nuclear engineering at UW-Madison who studies electrical systems.

But it has problems running clean elections.
What about Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota?
They too had minimal problems because they did not allot 25% of their power production to crap sources such as wind and solar. It’s not that hard to do.
Well duh.
Clearly Texas messed up by putting a bunch of lawyers who don’t even live there, Texas that is, in charge of their energy grid.
Plenty of blame to go around but Abbott’s the guy in charge.

Or Illinois, or Iowa...humming right along with plenty of wind energy generation down to -25F, thanks to properly designed systems with de-icers. And grid interties that do no purport to be “independent”.
It’s not the cold. It is the freezing rain.
I want our power grid to stay independent, they should plan for extreme weather better, not join the rest and then import power from other states.
I cannot stand seeing acres and acres of solar panels or big wind turbines— awful!
Then getting rid of those monstrosities after they are spent. Ugh!
Just wait until Wisconsin gets a summer of 100+ days for a whole week
Last time I checked, the Palo Verde Nuclear generating station in Arizona keeps running whether it’s 115 deg out (common in that area for about 4 months out of the year) or even when it’s freezing.

And this is why Texas folks will not have to pay outrageous bills.
The company that builds all the wind generators in MN-WI-IA-NE is located in Iowa.
They are built for cold conditions and very reliable.
I suspect the ones in Texas were built by cheap labor and cheap engineers.
I wonder who made the decisions in Texas? Some bad ones were made clearly.
That actually happened during the 1995 heatwave and nothing happened to the grid itself. Our electrical grid is very reliable here in WI.
Because Texas has weather like this for a few days every 30-40 years. Should Texas spend like Wisconsin on this type of thing to minimize a freak event?
Wind and solar had nothing to do with it. Texas neglected to winterize their grid even after they were told to do so in 2012 when they had a cold snap that year. I just drove through mountains of W.Va 2 days ago and saw 30+ windmills operating fine in 5 degree weather

It is a freak event but I wonder why trucks loaded with generators were not streaming into Texas as soon as the roads were safe. Where was the federal government getting that help to them?
