Publishing House Baen Books Attacked by Cancel Culture

Yesterday some nobody, wannabe writer, social justice twit released a hit piece “expose” about how posters on Baen’s Bar ...

However, this was clearly part of a coordinated attack in order to materially harm our business, because immediately after the hit piece was released complaints were filed with the various internet companies Baen uses for services to pressure them into kicking us off the internet. This hit piece was presented as “evidence”.

Without going into details the companies then contacted Baen about these “serious allegations” so last night Baen temporarily took down the Bar forum to protect the rest of the company from being deplatformed.

Jim Baen was the founder of this company currently under attack by the left for its thought crimes . Been died in 2006 of a stroke. I was a subscriber to his Galaxy magazine way back in the 70's.

The left cannot tolerate dissent because their ideas always fail when put into effect. Baen publishing has apparently been getting more than its share of conservative writers because the left got those writers banned from other places.

This is an effort to shut Baen down because it has become a place for conservative writers to publish their ideas.

Interesting, thanks for posting.

I’m not much of a sci-fi fan (I think I stopped with Heinlein...) so I wasn’t familiar with this publisher.

The “offensive parts” of the discussions on their forum appear to be mostly FR style venting and the crop of comments that the complainer harvested seem in general to be responses to recent efforts to demonize conservatives, particularly in the wake of Dec. 6. This event, where the only person who was killed was one of the protesters, seems now to be considered by the left to be the equivalent of 9/11 and Pearl Harbor all rolled into one. Yet at the same time, it seems to be verboten to talk about it unless you share that view, and truly forbidden even to question the truth of that view.

Science fiction is practically by definition speculation and the projection of things that might have been or might be, so it’s natural that the sci-fi readers who post on Baen’s Bar would have an interest in and opinions on the topic. But the left is trying to suppress all discussion of it, no matter how obscure the forum or publication.

I think that’s really what’s behind this attack, and I hope the publisher is able to fight it successfully. Their statement was certainly very good.

As a service to civilization, Kratman’s “Caliphate” is a free Kindle download.
Not for children or overly sensitive souls.

The Left is trying to control and place everything under its boot including the comic book industry and sci-fi. Writers like Heinlein would be deplatformed today.

“ Writers like Heinlein would be deplatformed today.”

Absolutely. Imagination is a dangerous thing to the left. Remember the old Soviet Writers Union? Any day now...

So as to avoid giving hits to Amazon, Tom Kratman's Caliphate is also available for free download in multiple formats directly from the Baen website here..

The rest of Baen's Free Library can be found here. Lots of good stuff there. Like any good drug dealer, the first one's free...

Batten the hatches:
I’ve tried to warn people about the growing danger of Cancel Culture for years. Too many people who are nominally on [the] right... are still debating philosophy and pontificating about moral equivalence things like the Red Scare from decades ago, while right now the left is actively mastering how to weaponize technology in order to crush the free exchange of ideas. You need to wake up and catch up. The Bar isn’t a hotbed of extremism. It’s not a hotbed of anything. It’s an old forum that was mostly kept around because of tradition. It was created at the dawn of internet forums... But that isn’t the point. Anything that can be a target, will eventually be a target. They’re coming for your business next.

The person fomenting the cancel attack is identified by name in the part of this article 32 paragraphs below Weisskop’s letter.
