Statement from Sen. Ted Cruz

With school cancelled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon. My staff and I are constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas.

I agree. Stupid beyond belief. But that’s been his pattern. The man has a tin ear and just doesn’t pick up what’s going on around him. That’s why he comes across...even though I like him and what he says...as harsh and uncaring.

Trump never did.

Again, I am not a Texan although I love and respect the state, but how/why did Cruz help create this problem? How exactly is his presence going to help?

I get that it is bad optics, but how would a Senator turn the power back on right now?

I work in a field involving failure analysis. Smart companies and local/state governments try to anticipate events and implement plans and infrastructure to mitigate the impact.

That clearly did not happen here and I don’t see any place in the constitution where it is the responsibility of a US Senator to oversee disasters OR to prepare for them.

I am not even a big Cruz fan any longer, but even I can see the media driven hit pieces for what they are and they apparently work well.

Perhaps if Texas had a democrat senator we would not be so embroiled in green energy boondoggles and utilities would be better prepared for such a rare weather event?

What’s dumb is talking about Texans starving and dying lol. All the deaths have been from people bringing in their BBQ pits into the house, either setting the whole place on fire or dying from carbon monoxide poisoning.

I haven’t heard of a single death from ice on the road, “freezing” or “starvation,” aside from a bum who refused to go into a shelter and probably got wet and died outside.

I think there was a 100 car pileup that occurred before the outages hit due to ice on the road, somewhere north.

To all posters who think that Cruz should be in Texas, I ask “Doing what?”

- Abbot is in charge in Texas - is Cruz supposed to stand around and watch Abbot?

- Should Cruz stand on the northern border of Texas and raise his hands and command the storm stay away? (Didn’t Zero try this with the rising oceans?)

- Should Cruz take a blowtorch and thaw out windmills?

- Shovel snow off the solar panels?

I’m trying here ... any reasonable suggestions?

Okay. However....
I’m not going to apologize for the following:

May God watch over and help the people in cold weather conditions like those in Texas and guide them to warmth and safety. Amen

Well put, he really does come across as our version of Hillary, someone cold as a stone. And Trump comes across as Bill Clinton, on a personal level at least - the kind of guy you’d want joining you to watch a football game and down some beers. HUGE DIFFERENCE in personalities.

Maybe in a state that is +25 Republican he could survive this, but not here in Texas, not with our nearly even split. He’s now toast, and yes, I too liked his voting record...but you can’t survive as a Republican after getting caught doing something as dumb as what he did, not in Texas at least.

I don’t think he needs to be bashed—or really that any excuse is needed.

But I don’t think the parental “Don’t blame me, I was just indulging every whim of privileged offspring by taking them on an international vacation trip because they asked me to” response is really much of an excuse. Makes him sound like an overindulgent Dad IMO.

Also, while we knew the storm would be difficult for us in Texas because we are simply no set up to deal with harsh winter conditions, particularly in south Texas; no one was expecting the power failures we have had. The failure of the electric grid was not predicted by anybody. Sure, we thought there would be some downed power lines, but there was very little of that.

I have been hearing of carbon monoxide poisoning because people got in their cars and started them to use the heater and apparently did not open their garage doors and were poisoned. There were deaths from fires caused by either candles or space heaters. But people have not been freezing to death.

I did see a story of a family with a little preemy baby that needed oxygen and the lack of power was keeping his parents from running the machine that converts air to oxygen. I hope he makes it.
