Two COVID-19 vaccines are available in the U.S., and a third, developed by Johnson & Johnson recently submitted an application for emergency use authorization, meaning it could be available in early March.
With so many options, many people are wondering whether it matters which shot they get.
The short answer is that you should get whichever shot you are offered, experts told Live Science. But there are several reasons why certain shots might work better for different populations.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine had 66% efficacy at reducing severe and moderate cases of COVID-19, which include either two mild symptoms or one more serious symptom, such as low blood oxygen levels or increased respiratory rate, Live Science previously reported. In other words, people vaccinated with the J&J shot were three times less likely to get a mild or moderate case of COVID-19 compared with participants who received a placebo. Meanwhile, the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine had 95% efficacy, and the Moderna vaccine had 94% efficacy at preventing symptomatic COVID-19, meaning any positive test with even one symptom, however mild.
All three vaccines are thought to be 100% effective at preventing hospitalization and death related to COVID-19.
But while the Moderna and Pfizer two-shot regimens look, on paper, to be more efficacious, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has an edge because it doesn't require a follow-up shot and it can be stored at ordinary refrigerator temperatures for months, said Dr. Peter Gulick, a professor of medicine and an infectious disease expert at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. That could help with getting more people vaccinated especially those who may not come back for a second shot, as well as in locales where access is a problem, he said.

Frankly, if I were to EVER get this vaccine, it will be a minimum of 10 years, and most likely 20, before I do. And, at that point, I’ll be 70, so why bother?
There’s just way too much unknown on this virus, AND vaccine, to just become the guinea pig, or test cases.
What ever happened to regenron?
I’m waiting for the Israeli inhaler.
The vaccines are experimental. They have very limited clinical testing period. So much is unknown.
I know can say I know of 14 extended family members that have tested positive for Covid 19, had varying degrees of symptoms and have seemingly recovered.
Some kept their Covid illness quietly to themselves, and only now are revealing they had it. Is this due to shame? or fear of public criticism? One is 93 years old,two in their seventies, all with obvious co-morbidities.
None were hospitalized, none were given any of the remedies that have shown promise in the early stages of illness.
Same here - why mess with RNA when a proven immune response vax is available - it’s what I’m holding out for.
I’m using it as a prophylactic - so far, so good.
Did you actually use it as a palliative?
‘Splain, please...
What do any of the vaccines do?
They cause the immune system to make antibodies to certain proteins used by & needed for the Wuhan Virus.
What does getting a real Wuhan Virus infection do.
It causes the immune system to make antibodies to certain proteins used by & needed for the Wuhan Virus. For 90% of those so infected is this method a critical problem? No. For the rest is it fatal? Only for a small percentage.
Why does everyone assume they are or would be in that very small fatal percentage.
And which set of antibodies are likely to remain active longer? Those the body makes due to an actual infection, or those temporarily induced artificially?
Why do I say such truthful things. I have never ever had a flu shot and never had a serious case of the flu.
RE: They cause the immune system to make antibodies to certain proteins used by & needed for the Wuhan Virus.
OK, the vaccines and being infected ( and surviving ) do the same thing.
But the promise of the vaccine is that it will PREVENT you from getting sick. If even that can’t be fulfilled, then the vaccines are not any better than getting infected and surviving.
RE: And which set of antibodies are likely to remain active longer?
I don’t think we can answer that question that this early stage of the vaccine’s deployment. We barely have 2 months of experience with it. As for the Wuhan virus, I believe we have over a year to determine how active the antibodies still are for those who have been infected early last year. To make a long story short — It’s still too early to make a god comparison.
Precisely why I will not have this vaccine, most likely, ever.
Why does everyone assume they are or would be in that very small fatal percentage?
They shouldn't as a bad flu or a bout of pneumonia are far more dangerous. The Wuhan CHINA Virus was necessary to kick off the Big Steal and their hoped for Great Reset.
As Americans could not be forced to abandon social gatherings and close contact due to Constitutional protection they're led to do that to themselves with fear the propagandist media relentlessly pushed. This also allowed the mail-in vote scheme which was the critical component for stealing the presidential election.
As proud2beconservativeinNJ described in Post #24 the virus is definitely beatable by most peoples' immune systems without medicine or vaccines - just time and care do that. Quinine, zinc and vitamin D seem to be extremely effective but those don't enrich the pharmaceutical industry who spend countless millions for politicians.
I personally believe the "herd immunity" path is the wisest. It worked for measles and chicken pox back 'in the day' when parents purposely exposed their children to those for insured life-long immunity. Same goes for the ever-evolving cold virus: every one you get over is one and done until it mutates over a long time. A very few would die but they would be the ones so frail their time was already short (I'm sorry to put it so harshly).
But I get free VA health care so will accept the vaccine they're starting to distribute, being recently post-cancer with an iffy immune system. Someone please kill me if I turn into a liberal after the shots.
I prefer the herd immunity method to the herd mentality method. If the herd mentality method prevails it is guaranteed it will continue to be exploited by anyone and everyone seeking to control the sheeple, for purposes having nothing to do with the premise by which such means of control are invoked.
“Why do I say such truthful things.”
Hardly “truthful.” Selective and incomplete information to produce a desired narrative.
“I have never ever had a flu shot and never had a serious case of the flu.”
Russian roulette.
“I prefer the herd immunity method”
That’s the purpose of the vaccine.
Exactly.
NO one knows for sure, yet.
These shots have been rushed to market, to buy a fat hog.
Wait a year, or two, and then decide which one is best, or not, for you.
Lucy’s not home.

“Russian roulette.”
No. A working immune system.
The immune system is not designed to just attack bacteria and viruses it already knows, it is designed to create new approaches for reacting to bacteria and viruses never encountered before. From childhood on THAT is our immune system develops - meeting millions of bacteria and viruses everyday and coming up with responses as needed. Out T-cells then retain memory of successes and when called upon can put old formulas to work again as needed. Most people that survived the Spanish flu illness never got a vaccine.
Herd immunity can be developed naturally by (a) protecting the most vulnerable, (b) develop successful early treatment to prevent severe illness, (c) develop successful treatments for severe illness, (d) let natural immunity develop among everyone else.
Instead of (a), (b) or (c) all the priorty focus was on a medical and social holding pattern that largely did nothing for (a), prevented prioritizing of (b) and (c), and waited, unnecessarily for a vaccine (which might still be O.K. for just the most vulnerable).
