‘It was angry, vicious’: spate of squirrel attacks leave NYC neighborhood in fear

At least three people in Rego Park, in Queens, have been jumped upon and bitten by a possibly deranged squirrel

New York City is not known for hair-raising animal experiences – save for the odd pizza-loving rat – but one city neighborhood is being subjected to an unwelcome slice of the wild by being terrorized by a highly aggressive squirrel.

At least three people in Rego Park, in the borough of Queens, have been jumped upon and bitten by the possibly deranged squirrel in recent weeks. The tree-based rodent’s reign of terror has made some people in the area afraid to go outside without being armed with pepper spray or other anti-squirrel weaponry.

“A few people are quite scared,” Micheline Frederick, a local resident, told Guardian US. Frederick was herself targeted by the squirrel in a bloody attack on 21 December, when she was holding her front door open for furniture movers.

“Suddenly the squirrel ran up my leg and I thought ‘it’s a small rodent, how bad could this be’, so I stood completely still and they next thing I knew the blood started to fly. It was a wrestling match that got very bloody very quickly,” Frederick said.

Frederick’s lengthy solo struggle with the squirrel – the furniture movers fled inside her house to safety - was captured by her neighbor’s security camera. The footage shows blood on Frederick and nearby snow. Frederick suffered bites to her arms and hands, with her little finger badly gnawed on by the animal.

“I had my hand around its body and I could not get this thing off,” she said. “It was angry, vicious and incredibly strong.” She eventually shook it off, only for the squirrel to run up a tree and stare at her.

When I lived in the Bronx NY, it was the first and only time I observed a black as pitch squirrel. It was a sight to behold. However squirrels in general can do extensive damage if they get into the attic. They just love gnawing on electrical wiring and can cause electrical fires.

Excellent...now let’s re-introduce wolves, grizzlies, etc into these filthy democrat cities like they do to fly over country.

I can relate!! The squirrels practically knock on our patio doors. Cute but pushy and we have to always be on guard about them getting into the attic and causing damage.

About 35 years ago, I was visiting Toronto and saw my first black squirrels. They were very numerous there. I see that some carrying the melanistic gene must have made their way to NY. I used to see them in my Queens neighborhood, with normal grey squirrels in the same litter.

I used to have a coworker who was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman. I never ate what he brought in for "pot luck" days. Crock pot squirrels with cream of anything soup, passed off as Turkey ala king. People would eat it up enthusiastically.

Black Sucker-fish run up the streams every April in Wisconsin. He would net out enough to fill five burlap feed sacks. About 700 pounds. His wife pickled it and labeled the jars as "pickled herrring".

With proper planning one never needs a grocery store if thats how you like to live. He was very good at it.

Those little red pine squirrels are the worst. They will chew a structure to splinters in no time at all.

A family of Black squirrels used to attack my daughters school bus when it stopped for a Stop sign. They can be aggressive.
