As alcohol abuse rises amid pandemic, hospitals see a wave of deadly liver disease

As the pandemic sends thousands of recovering alcoholics into relapse, hospitals across the country have reported dramatic increases in alcohol-related admissions for critical diseases such as alcoholic hepatitis and liver failure.

Alcoholism-related liver disease was a growing problem even before the pandemic, with 15 million people diagnosed with the condition around the country, and with hospitalizations doubling over the last decade.

But the pandemic has dramatically added to the toll. Although national figures are not available, admissions for alcoholic liver disease at Keck Hospital of USC were up 30% in 2020 compared with 2019, said Dr. Brian Lee, a transplant hepatologist who treats the condition in alcoholics.

Leading liver disease specialists and psychiatrists believe the isolation, unemployment and hopelessness associated with COVID-19 are driving the explosion in cases.

The blame for this lays squarely at the feet of the governors and mayors who went mad with power once they learned they could order millions of people to give up basic liberties.

Liver damage occurs slowly over many years due to alcohol. This article is garbage. If they would have written an article about a rise in alcohol poisonings due to overdrinking a la Bon Scott or Amy Winehouse it would have been more believable.

Perhaps I did a poor job excerpting.

Liver lock-downs! No more traveling to the liquor stores. Stay in your homes and go cold turkey otherwise your liver will look like a piece of burnt bacon.

Here's we see an actual image of a liver from a victim of alcohol abuse, caused by the pandemic.

That’s what I thought but if you read the excerpt they are talking about people who had successfully quit drinking who relapsed due to the lockdowns and isolation. A good many of those probably had some underlying liver disease already.

If you quit drinking the liver can heal itself. So either they hadn't stopped drinking for very long before they restarted or their livers were already so damaged they were on the edge anyway. That probably doesn't make up a very large percentage of people who have been isolated due to the pandemic.

I have no doubt there are people who are going to drink themselves to death because they have lost hope and this pandemic was the last straw. But this article is just trying to sensationalize a small percentage of that group.

I can show you a picture of a healthy liver, and then I can show you one of a horribly unhealthy liver. Guess what? Both people are dead. Drink up! Cheers!

I wonder what adjustments AA had to make to accommodate quarantines?

A local liquor store sells T-shirts that say, ‘The liver is evil. It must be punished.’

Living with covid is a piece of cake compared to life and morale under Obama and now Biden. The wonder is that the whole country isn’t drunk.

In the USSR the state food stores shelves might be bare, but the state liquor stores were always stocked to the ceiling with vodka.

Soviet rulers knew what they were doing.

Are liquor prices going up? I don’t think so.

That idiot governor in Pennsylvania closed all the state liquor stores. He should have put up Soviet style posters exhorting “Safety! Discipline! Temperance, comrades!”

Then the lockdown was quietly withdrawn. Hmm....

Last September, I quit drinking due to poor health. After 40 years of beer binging, I thought my liver would never shrink. Today, six months later, the beer gut is completely gone and my liver is clean and, miraculously, undamaged. I lost an astounding 22 lbs. I just mention this in case someone else here is thinking of quitting. Your reward and results might be significant.
