Twitter Fans Celebrate James Dean's Birthday, Who Would Have Been 90 Today

Whereas young people in their teens or 20s are into actors like Robert Pattinson or Chris Evans, those that grew up in the '50s have fawned over the late, but never forgotten actor James Dean. Dean was at the top of the world with his film credits including Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and Giant.

His loss is still a heavy toll on Hollywood as Dean was at the height of his career, only to be taken so suddenly from a car accident. Today, Dean would have been 90 years old, so fans on Twitter celebrate the legendary actor's time alive.

‘It was ahead of it’s time though...’

which is precisely why it’s considered a great film...

“it’s only a short matter of time until we start seeing movies with dead actors in unlikely scenes together.”

The legal hurtles would be large. I think it is more likely they create films with generic actors. I remember reading when they made Shriek they had to tone down the realism because some of the characters were too lifelike.

I think it will happen though from a cost cutting perspective of not having to pay actors and the actors never get old. It should also reduce production time for multiple takes for several actors. Also, “cartoon” actors will not do anything in real life that will destroy their market value or that of the franchise.

When the ego is bigger than one’s driving ability, stuff happens
The crash that killed James Dean was not his fault - a 1950 Ford driven by Donald Turnupseed crossed the center line and hit his Porche head on.

Doesn’t hurt that he was directed by 3 of the greates directors, Nicholas Rey, Elian Kazan and George Stevens. But if you watch his TV stuff, he’ s pretty average. I will give him credit though, he was blind as a bat. Can’t imagine hitting a mark not being able to not see it.

I bet he would have been laid low in his 40’s-50’s, during the AIDS thing in the 1970’s.

"I love his sausage."

Rumor has it that Marlin Brando and Rock Hudson (among others) also loved his sausage.

Anyone traveling CA-46 between Paso Robles on 101 and Kettleman City on I-5 will pass the Jack Ranch Cafe in Shandon/Cholome near the junction of CA-41 and 46. The James Dean Memorial is located in the Cafe’s parking lot and is well worth the stop, as is a visit to the Cafe, both the food and the decor are noteworthy.
The intersection of 41 and 46 is still a bit unusual and can easily confuse a first timer, although it has undergone several redesigns since the accident.
Dean’s Porsche Spyder collided with a 1950 Ford driven by David Turnupseed, a student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, who was on his way to visit his parents in Tulare. The sun was directly in Dean’s eyes as it was going down at dusk. Turnupseed turned left onto 41. Dean’s Porsche Spyder struck the Ford’s passenger side door and Dean sustained massive injuries, he was DOA arriving at hospital in Paso Robles. Dean was accompanied by his mechanic who was also very seriously injured but eventually recovered. Turnupseed escaped with only minor abrasions and after being released by police hitchiked home.
Later analysis indicated that excessive speed was not a factor in the crash. Turnupseed had slowed to make his left turn, and careful examination of the damage to the Spyder indicated normal distortion consistent with posted speed limits.
Dean was dead but Turnupseed’s life was also severely impacted. He received everything from death threats to name calling and every imaginable insult in between for the remainder of his life. After graduation he returned to Tulare and worked to grow his Electrical business which prospered in spite of customers canceling projects when he was identified as the man who killed James Dean. Turnupseed’s undeserved misfortune tormented him till his death at age 63. Dean’s death was a tragedy, but Turnupseed’s life was haunted by the same tragic accident.
Often excessive speed is cited as the ‘cause’ of the collision because Dean was on his way to a race in Salinas and because he’d gotten a speeding ticket on Highway 99 earlier that same afternoon. However, careful examination indicated both vehicles were operating within legal guidelines. No finding of fault has been officially declared.

” Rebel Without a Cause is one of the most over rated movies ever.”
I think this movie was made for teens of the day. IMO it was more like a documentary for kids advising them of the perils a JD (juvenile delinquent) faces. I viewed this movie when it first came out around ‘56. I was in my mid teens at the time and it made an impression on me.

When I first saw James Dean’s movies on TV (early 70’s), I thought he was one of the best actors I’d ever seen. Years later, I wonder if the world would have tired of his angst-ridden portrayals. I would have. He was certainly fortunate to have only starred in movies with great directors and co-stars.
