A section of Highway 1 in Big Sur has disappeared.
One lane of the highway was struck by debris flow and washed away, Caltrans reported. The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.
According to Big Sur Fire, the section of highway is located at Rat Creek, south of Esalen and north of Big Creek.
Caltrans crews will be out at the damaged section of road Friday morning to fully assess the damage.
What a great stretch of road. There is a house overlooking the ocean right between this spot and Pebble Beach. It’s my dream house. Too bad I can’t buy it since I could never tolerate living under the commies in Sacramento.
First movie to clean-sweep the Oscars: Best Picture/Screenplay/Director/Actor/Actress, and in my opinion deservedly so.
California should be closed as a safety precaution and all residents relocated to their countries of origin.
How is my memory?
Parts of California have a long dry season and a long wet season. In the dry season the fires destroy the vegetation and in the wet season the heavy rains wash away the soil as mudslides. Cycle just continues.
Because of globull warming it’s never gonna rain or snow again in California - oh, wait . . .
“Parts of California have a long dry season and a long wet season. In the dry season the fires destroy the vegetation and in the wet season the heavy rains wash away the soil as mudslides. Cycle just continues.”
Yes it does.
“Does California DOT pack sand back in the hole, dig out more of the hill to move the road in further, or build a bridge?”
First there will be a billion dollar “study.” Then, another billion for an EIS. Then a few billion for union workers to come out and review the studies. Then a couple billion for bureaucrats to review all the reviewed studies to declare they will need another study because someone found a 3 toed speckled frog that ONLY lives in that one spot of the coast. And by then, cars will have been outlawed so they will not repair the road.
The specs and my races, dispute that.
It’s beautiful.
Last month, I bought a '64 Cabriolet, and a '61 Coupe from an old friend's garage. He'd passed away, having left them both for restoration—about 30 years ago!
Drive it in a stick shift and flew it in a 152 in the late ‘80’s.

How rare and wonderful is that? I went to do some horseback riding in the Shenandoah mountains, but it poured rain for the two days I was there, even the people who ran the place went off and left me there all by myself!
After two days, I was bored out of my gourd, no horseback riding, no phone, no Internet, and it was pouring rain constantly and I was all alone. So I got out a map, and picked the Four Corners Monument in Utah as my destination, and started out at 0400 the next morning.
The rain was intense. There was nobody on the Blue Ridge, and I could not believe how hard the rain was coming down. I saw the James River, and it was the color of light chocolate milk from all the mud flowing into it.
There were waterfalls everywhere coming down off the rocks on the side of the road. On both sides of the road, there were gullies with white water running downhill. I saw a bunch of beer cans going down with the current, bobbing along like the yellow flotation barrels that Quint shot into the shark in the movie "Jaws".
I saw a snowplow go the other way-they were using snowplows to clear the mud, branches, and such off the road!
So, I finally came to the part to turn off the Blue Ridge...the road sign said "No Trucks or Campers", and boy, were they right. It was a series of hairpin turns going down, with the rain pouring down and my windshield wipers on double speed!
I have to admit. It was hair raising, but...I actually took my point out and took video as I was doing it...:) I do not talk on the phone in my car, I always pull over to make or take a call, but...I felt that if I tried to explain it to someone without the video...I wouldn't get the intensity of it across.
What a beautiful area. Just beautiful.
101 isn’t 1, but it’s still a nice drive to Paso Robles.
Ever take the narrow, windy road from Hunter Ligget Military Reservation over to Highway 1? That’s a spectacular drive. The first time I did it I was headed west, crested the mountain for the first view of the ocean and at that precise moment Holst’s “The Planets” was crescendoing on “Mars: Bringer of War.” Wow.
The old Highway 1 at Devil’s Slide is now a nice hiking and biking “trail.” On foot, you can take as much time as you want admiring the vistas.
Never heard of it
I’ll try it
I luv that house!
How does it get fixed? The road disappears off the edge. There is nothing to build up from.
Jolson, CA. Naciememto-Ferguson Road to Monterey County Road 4004. Long and windy!
We might not be thinking of the same house. Looking at my videos/pics, it’s actually on 17 mile drive about 5 or 10 minutes before you get to the club house at Pebble. Always think of the lucky dogs waking up every morning, having coffee and looking out on that spectacular view. Sigh... not me.
