A section of Highway 1 in Big Sur has disappeared.

One lane of the highway was struck by debris flow and washed away, Caltrans reported. The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.

According to Big Sur Fire, the section of highway is located at Rat Creek, south of Esalen and north of Big Creek.

Caltrans crews will be out at the damaged section of road Friday morning to fully assess the damage.

It Happened One Night

The progenitor of the Screwball RomCom, Bugs Bunny, the "show some leg" hitchhiking scenes, etc.

The story was recycled in Roman Holiday and Romancing the Stone.

GREAT writing. My favorite line is when Ellie (Claudette Colbert) swipes Peters' (Clark Gable) seat on the bus.

Peter Warne : Excuse me, lady, but that upon which you sit, is mine.
Ellie Andrews : I beg your pardon!

It was pre-code.

Take that road trip off my bucket list.

Don’t do that. Highway 1 is one of the great scenic drives in the world. I’ve done it many times. I miss it.

Just don’t drive it in the rain or shortly after. 😎

So, don’t they design drainage into their road systems?

I used to “upgrade” those Brit cars at my shop; got 475hp out of them. Sweet ride, except for kidney pain from the Koni shocks.

I love the “El Camino Real”. I used to drive tractor/trailer from Miami to Cali three times a month. I’d rather run 101 than I-5 or 99 when heading north out of LA.

I always tell people my son’s shirt size is “extra medium.”

On a serious note, Highway 1 has been falling into the ocean for years. I used to love riding my motorcycles up and down the coast.

“Isn’t that in California?” It was. ...

However, someone has started a Recall Petition for it...

I have driven that road many time over the years. Very scenic, and very dangerous.

It is excellent. I drove from san fran to san diego many years ago, took two days. Then i drove north from sanfran to Eureka thru napa and then the coast several years ago.

Didn’t handle well - so much engine weight that slamming on the brakes could send car in a short side-wise loop. But I got mine to 180 mph before chickening out.

Ford engines 289/427 were withdrawn after too many factory shelbys and cobras were beaten at the track. But I see there is a new 2020 model out.

A friend and I drove it in 68 in a 68 Dodge Charger 440. Blue with black vinyl top, 390 horse, it was fun.

Perhaps for the time being, but you really should do that road trip. It will not disappoint .

Looks like folks here wouldn’t like driving over passes on ice in CO to go to work every day. ...sliding around those switchbacks and going downhill 70 mph on the less curvy parts. ;)

Drove down that stretch of road a few weeks ago. The fire this summer made this almost inevitable.

There’s a place about 150 miles to the north called Devil’s Slide because it used to wash out every few years. They finally bypassed it with inland tunnels.

I know it’s fashionable on here to bash CA for its politics, believe me I hate that too, but scenically it is God’s country. Go visit and ignore the politics; it’s beautiful.

This. And we shouldn't surrender Cali's natural resources and natural wonders without a fight to the death. Just walk away from it? I don't think so.

Nothing new, I believe an even larger piece of highway go bye-bye happened in that area 3 or so years ago. Normal.
