The death of Keystone XL would be a blow to workers and communities along the pipeline’s route
The Globe and Mail ^ | 1/23/20 | Kelly Cryderman

Construction on the Keystone XL pipeline has helped keep Emily Lai’s small family restaurant alive during months of COVID-19 lockdowns. The 90′s Restaurant, on Main Street in Oyen, Alta., has stayed afloat by serving takeout to hundreds of tradespeople who temporarily moved to the area to work on the project.

But now that the TC Energy Corp. pipeline has been halted, she said she and her husband are more anxious about the future of the Chinese and Western cuisine restaurant they have owned for nearly a decade.

“My husband is feeling sad, too, and worried about the business,” Ms. Lai said this week.

TC Energy says about 1,000 construction workers, in both Canada and the United States, have been or will be given layoff notices in the weeks ahead. The Calgary-based company has said the cancellation will eliminate the jobs of thousands of union workers at TC Energy contractors.

Some were employed by Michels Canada, which was awarded the contract to construct about 260 kilometres of the project in Alberta. No one from the company was immediately available for comment this week.

But one of the construction workers on the pipeline had been lodging at the home of Oyen Mayor Doug Jones. On Wednesday, Mr. Jones said his boarder – who usually left at 6 a.m. and returned at 7 p.m. – came home at 10 in the morning. The mayor of the town of 1,100 was worried there had been an on-site accident.

The extended economic impact would have been significant.

That’s the idea don’t u get it? He has to strike right off the bat at the left’s enemies. It impresses with minimal cost. Red states. Lower population. All we can do is clean up the voting system. Will our leaders? Ask Liz.

I really wish all red states would simply ignore Biden’s EOs on things like this. Keep producing energy. Tell the companies not to pay any fines and defend them from federal forces with the state’s national guard if it comes to that. Trump never once used federal forces against cities or states that didn’t cooperate with ICE. Biden will back down and if not, this would be the way to start the second civil war. The people of the state will come and fight if we knew the state had our back

In allot of cases we do. The majority of oil produced in the US comes from private property, while the state may have input the Feds do not. I believe it was December when we seen a historic event that few people noticed, we imported no oil from Saudi Arabia. It’s been 35 years since that last happen. The attack on oil and gas will impact every person and every part of the US with rising prices in fuel and raw materials. Production goes down and the price goes up, leaving us no option other than being at the mercy of imports again.

I have a friend who’s in his late 40’s and has been coding his entire career. I asked him if miners and construction workers could simply learn to code (knowing the answer)

He said that it’s getting so intense that even after a career in the business he’s often challenged. No way a guy who may use his laptop for emails and occasional word processing will ever simply learn to code.

That’s like me. I know how to use a few basic computer things and have less than zero interest in ever at any point developing any greater interest. I don’t know and I don’t care

That's the plan. Make the US as un competitive as possible so China dominates in manufacturing

We elected the worst possible man at the worst possible time

The DNC knows it doesn’t matter... Once they legalize 20 million plus illegal aliens they know nothing will overcome it... even fair elections...

The extended economic impact of cancelling the pipeline will be felt in a lot of other industries and across a lot of states. The job loss estimates are way off.

No way on average can a blue collar worker switch to coding... it requires a college degree... and... even in this field the H1B visa are taking over...

So even if they manage to get the degree... it is hard to get your foot in the door given the big in-sourcing companies control the supply... and the increasing numbers are foreign workers...

Project Management is a better alternative... but that to is hard to break into... but it is sti dominated by Americans...

H1Bs started taking over in the tech field after Y2K. UPRR had a bullpen of these smelly foreigners. Couldn’t go into their area without a can of fabreeze. We knew the gig was up after that.

It sounds like a project manager is a highly skilled individual with many years of experience, leading a team to meet specific goals for a company.

Can one actually earn a degree in project management?

"...Can one actually earn a degree in project management?..."

Don't know for sure; a quick search could uncover a lot...

However, I would think a business/management degree at many schools would include courses in project management, to include tools such as Gant charts, etc

I understand. I was channeling gropey joe who told coal miners they needed to learn to code with the loss of mining jobs.
