Wonder Lake hunter and repeat offender hit with charges, $10K fine after illegally killing deer

Conservation police charged a Wonder Lake hunter, who is a repeat offender, after he broke numerous laws while killing a deer in McHenry County.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police said that CPO Todd Semenik concluded an investigation into the Wonder Lake hunter on January 12.

The man illegally harvested a 12-point buck whitetail deer approximately 42 minutes after legal shooting time and over bait on a large vacant tract of land, police said.

The hunter, who police did not publicly name, was issued a $10,000 civil penalty for the assessed value of the protected species.

He was charged with unlawful take of whitetail deer, deer hunting by the aid of bait, unlawfully hunting between ½ hour after sunset and ½ hour before sunrise, hunting on lands without permission of owner, unlawfully archery hunting within 100 yards of an inhabited dwelling, destroy real property of another while hunting, failure to tag deer immediately upon kill, no valid deer permit (permit only valid on property where permission to hunt has been obtained), and unlawful feeding/baiting of wildlife.

“This is the fourth time this hunter had been cited for similar wildlife and trespassing violations by IDNR Conservation Police,” officials said.

The most recent citation was for hunting with the aid of bait on a different property in early December. The hunter’s crossbow was seized as evidence and the conservation department will be seeking forfeiture.

Police said that Rodger Brandt, owner of Wayne’s Country Market in Marengo, waived all processing fees for their services and the deer meat will be donated to a needy family in the area.

no valid deer permit (permit only valid on property where permission to hunt has been obtained)

Interesting, seems to imply a license isn't valid while trespassing which I wasn't aware of. No reason I should I suppose but hunting without a license might be the most serious of the charges.

Where they will say, ‘YUCK!’ and promptly throw it away. :(

Beautiful animal. This guy needs more punishment, though. Certainly not following the rules, nor would I consider him a ‘sportsman’ by ANY stretch. What did he shoot it with? Look at that gaping hole! Yeesh!

@ssholes like this give the rest of us a bad name. Grrr!

Whitetails are a protected species?

They are welcome to take as many of ours as they want. We are absolutely overrun with these big rats around Coeur d’Alene.

There’s a huge raging debate on NextDoor about controlling the deer population. It’s shocking how many Karens live around here and don’t want Bambi touched. The “discussion” always becomes argument and ends with “Go back to California.” Some of the nearby towns are hiring people to thin the herds (bow hunting is one of them) and that’s triggering all sorts of heated discussion at city halls.

There are a million acres of raw wilderness east and north, but the deer choose to come for the good food in the towns.

It says they confiscated his crossbow. That’s not a gaping hole, but blood on the fur. Still, that doesn’t look like a very humane shot.

Don’t know the laws in IL, but he may have to pay the value of the deer which isn’t insignificant and belongs to the people of the state. And probably a ban on hunting and fishing for a period which could be significant. In my mind the trespass is the worst, but that’s probably civil.

Yeah, first I've ever heard of white tail deer as a protected species.

The dude is not just a repeat offender, he's a serial offender who's not as smart as he thinks.

BTW, I love Coeur d'Alene, went there many times when I was in college. Great water skiing, had a friend whose family had a cabin on the lake.

CdA is a wonderful area, indeed. Too bad so many people are learning about it and pouring in now. Our family roots there go back to around 1920 when ancestors left fruit orchards in Southern BC and went to work in the Idaho lumber industry.

A man was out hunting o ce, and he had just shot a loon, and was bringing it back to the car when a ga e warden stopped him and said

...Hey, you can’t shoot those, liscence to hunt please....

The man produced his license and a sob story about being too poor to buy food. The warden listened, felt sorry for the man and said

.....Alright, I’m gonna let you go with a warning this time, just don’t do it again....

.....Oh by the way said the warden, what does loon taste like?

MN says, meh, not too bad, but nearly as good as spotted owls.

We have the same problem in Spokane they are everywhere. You are taking your life in your hands every time you ride a motorcycle.

What a lot of people don't understand is that there are very limited resources in the forest to support deer, they need grassland and we provided it.

I read somewhere they there 10 times the number of deer today than in the 1700s.

It sounds to me like the guy did have a valid hunting license but if he was hunting on private property, he needed a permit from the property owner.

With that being said, if this was the fourth time he's been busted he should have had his hunting and fishing privileges revoked for a few years prior to this one. But then again, I doubt that would have stopped him from hunting anyway...........

I've become addicted to that cable program North Woods Law.......If that had been available when I was a young kid, I would have probably looked at a career in game management.......

Based on his history, this guy needs to do some jail time........
