Will they shut down FR next? For most of us, our computers are the only access to the larger world outside. And we are all running windows 10. Windows 10 auto updates frequently, you can not turn it off. That means they have the capability to isolate us entirely to only human interactions within our community and peer groups. I just assumed they would never do what they are doing, so I have no back-up plan.

Couldn’t we just use non-smart phones or land lines?

Where can I find the IP address of FR?

Free Republic got deplatformed recently, and has moved its hosting to different servers. As far as Windows 10 is concerned, I am running Windows 10 Pro, and there is a switch in the Windows Update section that lets you control when updates occur.

Conservative Treehouse just went through the same thing, and recovered, as did Intellectual Froglegs - several times.

I also run Ubuntu Linux on another computer and feel better about its updates (which ask you before installing them). Nice O/S with free compatible versions of Microsoft Office. There is life without Microsoft!

“And we are all running windows 10.”

My Windows 7 is offended. ;)

Careful with the assumptions. Some of us are still running Windows 7.

In my case I'm running Win 7 so I don't have to put up with MSFT periodically issuing a mandatory update that breaks my computer.

Sounds like to need a secondary os that isn’t windows. You can run more than one os on a computer.

I'm running Kubuntu, a flavor of Linux.

Windows 10 auto updates frequently, you can not turn it off.

The following freeware products disable Windows 10 updates and most of the surveillance in the registry:

O&O ShutUp10
Private Win10
W10Privacy
Win10 Spy Disabler
WPD

I aslo use an auxiliary firewall that blocks all outbound traffic except for the apps you specifically allow (browsers, downloaders, streaming media). It has options to specifically disable comms with Microsoft servers: Simplewall

I have already turned off automatic updates on my computer to prevent slowdowns due to updates. This is my internet surfing computer and I never do any financial transactions on this computer. So updates are not necessary on a regular basis. I can always update once in a year.

Set your internet connection up as metered and no such updates take place. Not a single one.
