At least one of the group of intruders received some ballistic dissuasion when they entered the store. Thanks to the shop’s camera system, store management and cops have nice quality video of the incident, along with an image of the license plate of the getaway ride.
The car’s driver dropped his bleeding buddy at the local hospital’s ER entrance before speeding back to Peoria. The guy they’d left at the hospital is now in the morgue.
Meanwhile, cops found the driver/car owner not long after. It wasn’t exactly tough detective work since the (alleged) perp used his own car. Perhaps he was unaware that the Illinois Gun Dealer Licensing Act now requires gun shops to keep their parking lots under video surveillance along with the interior of the stores.
Hopefully news of this failed attempt at a smash and grab gun shop heist will help deter other underachievers from a similar fate. At the same time, it may also nudge some gun shop owners into bringing a cot to work for an occasional overnight stay.
A gun store. Sheesh. Find another line of work. You flunked burglary, bigly.
Have they decided to prosecute the store owner yet?

Yep. Two places you rarely hear about getting robbed, or attempted to be robbed anyway...gun stores and pawn shops.
Why? Because both are authorized to allow employees to open carry. In my state that’s true at least.

I'm wondering how the perp is charged with murder when the shopkeeper is the one who fired shots? No way am I defending him, but I guess I just don't understand...??

I would think that law is not routinely prosecuted, or it would be fairly common in the gang-related homicides.

I think it’s discretionary and perhaps that the prosecutors like to do this in order to get an acceptance to plead at a lesser charge.
Of course I learned about it by watching Law & Order.🤣
I’ve been to that store a few times, but not since moving to TN four years ago. It is in the same building as Galesburg Electric supply. That is probably considered the tougher part of town, poorer residential to the north, industrial park to the south.
While trying to keep my farming career alive, post Jimmah Cawtuh, I wrenched on planes at their airport, and later was a steel fabricator at a food proccessing equipment manufacturer; both located just west of town.
