Liverpool legend Gerry Marsden, lead singer of Gerry and the Pacemakers has died.

He was 78.

His family confirmed his death was unrelated to Covid, and his friend Pete Price said the rocker died after a short illness related to a heart infection. Paul McCartney and others have honored the musician’s legacy.

“Might be, but one or two of The Yardbirds songs might qualify”

Or Heart Full of Soul.

“Ferry Cross The Mersey was a beautiful ballad about the love for one’s home.

Quite a departure from today’s rap blather.”

Yep. Gerry wrote that song. Not all the bands wrote their own music in those days. It was quite a beautiful simple tune.

Gerry conceived of the song in the car and went to a payphone and called his Mom. He asked his Mom to get his recorder and press Record. Then Gerry hummed what he had on the song over the phone and his Mom captured the initial idea. It may have just been a snippet of the song like the intro. Not sure. But it is a nice story.

Grew up with the Beatles but was blown away by the Yardbirds - esp their trio of lead guitarists. From Eric Clapton to Jimmy Page to Jeff Beck - the latter arguably the best of the group.

So many GREAT songs - “For Your Love”, “Heart Full of Soul”, “Shapes of Things”, “Happenings Ten Years Time Ago” and “Over Under Sideways Down”...just to name a few.

I agree with those who like “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” best but for me a close second was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIy3RdT88Hk

My favorite of his is “You’ll Never Walk Alone”

I love the song, but not so much by him. First time I heard it by him.

You must hear it here below by the late great Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge!

His rendition of You’ll never walk alone is the theme song of the Liverpool football club.

Incorporated into Pink Floyd’s “Fearless” from the Meddle Album
