Gerry Marsden, frontman of the Merseybeat band Gerry and the Pacemakers has sadly passed away at the age of 78.

Liverpool legend Gerry Marsden, lead singer of Gerry and the Pacemakers has died.
He was 78.
His family confirmed his death was unrelated to Covid, and his friend Pete Price said the rocker died after a short illness related to a heart infection. Paul McCartney and others have honored the musician’s legacy.
“Gerry was a mate from our early days in Liverpool. He and his group were our biggest rivals on the local scene. His unforgettable performances of You’ll Never Walk Alone and Ferry Cross the Mersey remain in many people’s hearts as reminders of a joyful time in British music…”

I made my own crossing of the Mersey River from Birkenhead to Liverpool in 1966, only it was by way of a bridge.
Sad...
But I won’t cry until after dark, because...

I root for Everton, but You’ll Never Walk Alone at Anfield is one of the greatest things in sports.
I saw Gerry and the Pacemakers LIVE in Rochester, NY early in their career. I think it was their first trip “across the pond”.
I’ll never forget how he dissed the crowd by acting like a total ass and having to ask “where the hell are we?”.
As if to say, what podunk colony town are we in?
Performance was okay I guess, but the mood had been destroyed.

Why is it that we only ever mourn the deaths of athletes, entertainers, and politicians?
Everybody else is unknown...............
Because most everyone knows them. A common thread. If I told ya Sammy Hogjaw from Hacksaw Arkansas died, would you mourn his death?

Ferry Cross The Mersey was a beautiful ballad about the love for one’s home.
Quite a departure from today’s rap blather.
