Derided in the West, spam is so beloved in Asia that one company has invented a meat-free version of it

Hong Kong (CNN)In a brightly lit restaurant in downtown Hong Kong, the meaty smell of fried spam fills the air.

As other staff prepare for the lunchtime rush, a cook is putting the finishing touches to a bowl of instant noodles, egg and spam, a dish so popular and iconic of local cuisine that it has its own shorthand in Cantonese (chaan daan mihn). But this bowl is different: despite being topped with two pink slabs of luncheon meat, it doesn't actually contain any animal products. The "spam" is vegan, a meat-free alternative developed by OmniFoods, a Hong Kong-based food producer and social enterprise. Like its US-based competitors Beyond Meat and Impossible, OmniFoods targets both vegetarians and meat-eaters with its plant-based foods, seeking to provide an ethical alternative that is less-environmentally damaging than meat.

There’s a Canadian version of Spam … mixed in with macaroni & cheese. Grew up in Canada & remember it being popular as a kid.

When I was working as an MP in Korea back in the 90s, Spam was one of the hot black market items that found its way from the commissary to the local economy with great frequency.

Yep. Only a handful of us OLD FReepers left, who like to point out the obvious in posted articles, LOL!

We love SPAM in this household, too. Spam and eggs for breakfast rocks our little world.

Once we start raising a few hogs for meat, it would be fun to see if we could come up with a home made SPAM-like product. I have made homemade sausage links and they turned out pretty good. But, I used bear meat. ;)

Maybe I’ll invent, SBAM? Special. Bear. American. Meat. Not as catchy. ;)

That’s what I was going to say. A diner in a town near here that caters to vets and cops has spam on the menu and folks love it. Spam and sunny-side eggs is magnificent for breakfast or lunch.

Never understood the affinity for spam in Hawaii. They DO love it. SMH.

During WWII, spam was just about the only protein source readily available on the Islands.

Necessity became a virtue.

Derided in the West? Says who?

I once visited Hawaii, where the SPAM section of the supermarket had about 10 different flavors - chipotle, hickory, jalapeño, cheese, etc… It was amazing.

I can’t figure out why for the life of me they don’t sell these varieties on the Mainland.

Some people on this thread commenting on how nasty spam is. I’ve always said....you’d be surprised what you’ll eat when your hungry enough. There is a point when hungry enough something like spam would be a delicacy....no matter how gross you thought it was.

If you ever get an email about pork, ham, salt,
and preservatives - don’t open it!

It’s spam.

LOL...... Good one.

If it’s a soy product, they can call it SPOYM.

Okay, it’s early here.
