Mashed Turnips Are Even Better Than Potatoes
lifehacker ^ | 12/21/2020 | Vaughn Stafford Gray

Buckle up everybody, for I am here to defend and exalt turnips. In fact, I’d go so far as to claim that turnips, when mashed, are better than their potato counterparts, and a far more interesting vehicle for gravy. Cooked turnips are firm yet velvety, slightly nutty, and bring a bit more oomph to your holiday spread. But, full disclosure, my not all of my turnip-eating Christmases have been merry.

I actually agree with the author.

I seldom eat potatoes because of the carb count. I've used turnips as a potato substitute in soups and stews; don't think I've tried them mashed. I do prefer mashed cauliflower to mashed potatoes. To me mashing is the least flavorful thing one can do to a potato.

I love radishes, when you are on a submarine the 1st thing to go is fresh veg, but we would grow them onboard.

So good 3 months out to sea...

Except turnips are very high in OXALATES, which is a natural plant poison that can ruin your kidney by creating kidney stones while the stones can result in breast cancer, kidney disease, heart attack, etc.

I only tasted a turnip once in college.

It had the texture of Apple, but absolutely no flavor.

I agree, even with copious amounts of cream and butter.

Did I mention they are delicious in all forms. Raw, fried, roasted, steamed, braised or any other way you wish to prepare them they taste of ambrosia. They can be a fresh salad topper, made like hash browns, in stews or substituted in anything either nuts or potatoes work with.

They grow as tuber roots of a pretty plant that has flowers that look like small sunflowers. They can be grown anywhere and the yield per plant is huge. You can plant a 1/2 lb of eyes in a 5 gallon bucket and end up with 15 to 20 lbs of these beauties at the end of the season.

I’ve never ate one but in the 70s I went to a seminar on making alcohol to power our cars and Jerusalem Artichokes were being touted as one of the highest alcohol per acre crops available.

The starch in Jerusalem Artichokes is the same thing you will find in those probiotic capsules at the pharmacy costing $30 for a months worth. The amount of inulin, that human indigestible starch, in a single tuber of of a couple of ounces is more than that months worth of gut bacteria food in those capsules.

Like I said, they are delicious. I would rate them as being in the top 10 in taste of things I have tried. Not quite up to fresh abalone, but close. Make sure you will be in an enclosed place with many people after you try them. A perfect plan would be to eat about a pound and then go ride high rise elevators for a few hours. The current masks will provide you anonymity.

A fun topic to discuss with your victims would be the theory that if you can smell a fart through a mask you can catch covid through it too.

Not quite up to abalone, but close. As I said... top 10. Abalone is top 5 for me.
