December 19, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Very pleasant weather here in Central Missouri over the past week. The nights have been cold and frosty, but the days have been sunny and warm.

Yesterday was *almost* t-shirt weather, and I probably should have finished the garden cleanup or gone fishing, but other things got in the way of that.

We’ve been picking at the collards and kale. That stuff always seems to taste better after it’s been frozen a few times.

I’ve had Pops’ little Massey Ferguson 4x4 loader tractor in my shop for the last couple months. Mice got into it and chewed the return line nipples on the plastic fuel tank. It was pumping diesel out and making terrible greasy mess, not to mention a serious fire hazard, so we decided to replace the tank here rather than take it to the MF dealer. Big mistake. After tearing the thing into a thousand pieces it became clear that the only way to remove the tank in one piece was to pull the entire operator platform and firewall off of the tractor. Finally wound up using a sawzall to cut the tank into pieces so it could be removed. I’m going to fabricate a new tank from sheet steel. Already torn to bits seemed like a good time to replace all of the filters and fluids. Finished that and got it reassembled yesterday, so all that’s left is to build and install the new fuel tank.

Been chipping away at installing the rip-rap rock around my pond dam. This load is all going below the water line, so I’m having to hand-toss every bit of it. It’s a lot of work, but if prevents future muskrat tunneling in the dam it will be worth the effort.

Mexican coca cola has real sugar in it.

Ours has high fructose corn syrup.

Oh forgot to say Nuka Cola is from a video game the kids used to play called “Fallout”. The New Vegas version was their favorite. They have a cookbook. I should buy it for my daughter.

I’ll have to try that. I use cola to control a chronic stomach problem (It works about 95% as well as the prescription I was taking, but is cheaper and with fewer side effects).

I’ve seen other cola recipes that called for fancy extracts or food-grade essential oils. I’ve been looking for one that used recognizable ingredients. This one looks promising.

SOMETHING is blowing your way because the wind is just HOWLING, today! We were close to 50 degrees and now rain and maybe snow is blowing in. You can have all the snow you want, LOL!

I harvested the remaining lettuces in the greenhouse - proud of myself that I made it nearly to Christmas Day, but I’m over it now. ;) I have basil and more lettuces going inside.

Christmas Menu for Saturday will be:

Baked Halibut (Beau caught in Alaska this summer)
Shrimp Scampi
Green Beans with Bacon (from the garden)
Twice Baked Potatoes (from the garden)
Rolls (Mom is bringing)
Christmas Cookies & Peppermint Ice Cream (Sis is bringing ice cream; Mom & I did cookies)

Sis said she got the LAST container of Peppermint at Walmart the other day; there must’ve been a run on it and TP, LOL!

So, not exactly ‘The Feast Of Seven Fishes,’ but good enough for our crew.

Beau is delivering boxes of cookies and presents for me around the neighborhood this afternoon - he’s so sweet.

Having a Zoom Meeting with my BFFs of 40 years in a bit to open our gifts to one another; some were mailed and some CJ shuttled around for us, yesterday.

Life Is Good, even though 2020 SUCKED and I cannot WAIT to see it GO!

Merry Christmas to You & Yours! :)

Sounds delicious. We love twice bakers, hubby makes some mean ones. You need a forklift. Loaded with everything, bacon, onions, cheese. Halibut is a favorite fish after grouper and salmon. Merry Christmas to you too!

It is very tasty. We didn’t go full strength on ours. We were afraid it would be too sweet. Add syrup to taste.
