Auburn has fired head football coach Gus Malzahn, the school announced Sunday.
The decision comes less than 24 hours after the Tigers finished the regular season with a 6-4 record after beating Mississippi State 24-10 on Saturday.
"After evaluating the state of the Auburn football program, we've decided that it was time to make a change in leadership," Auburn director of athletics Allen Greene said in a statement. "We appreciate everything that Gus did for the program over the last eight seasons. We will begin a search immediately for a coach that can help the Auburn program consistently compete at the highest level."
Sources told ESPN's Chris Low that Malzahn was informed of his firing just before a team meeting on Sunday.

Actually, I think Richard Shelby should now retire and Gus can run for Senate. Tubberville and Malzhan. I like the thought of that.

Going to be tough for Auburn no matter who the coach is, you’ll always have Bama, LSU will be back and now it looks like Fisher is finally getting A&M over the hump.

I think they made a mistake. Of course, Auburn can’t stand out any year with the tough teams in their conference and around them, but I doubt they’ll find a better coach.
Dawgs usually aren’t an easy game for the Tiger-Eagles, either. A good year is still likely to be 2-2 with those 4 teams.
On the other hand, Mike Bobo is available.
He’s only 55, which is hardly old for a coach. I doubt the firing was related to his age. They just got impatient because Alabama and LSU and Georgia have been getting more attention the last few years.
Don’t forget them GA Bulldogs. It’s a tough neighborhood.
I’m a Gus fan. I wish him well. This wasn’t unexpected.

I have a feeling that Patrick Nix had a lot to do with this one. His kid is beginning to look like a bust and Gus gets the blame.
But there is just so much an OC can dumb down an offense for a player. AU has given him plenty of opportunities for success, but he still has a high school hero mentality.

I thought colleges were in deep financial trouble due to the Wu Flu. Now they’ll be paying money that would make Hunter Biden choke on his crack pipe to two different coaches. If I were an Auburn parent I would ignore the pleas to give to the school over and above tuition.
Too bad for Mac Jones, that she’s now the odds-on favorite to win The Heisman.
