For decades, scientists say something alarming has been happening in the streams and rivers where coho salmon return from the Pacific Ocean to spawn along the West Coast.

After heavy rain events each fall, the fish have been turning up dead in huge numbers before they spawn, a mysterious phenomenon that has been the subject of intense research for years.

Now, scientists think they have found a key piece to this morbid puzzle...tires...

lol - I read ‘land’ sharks the first time. Works either way tho.

I’m looking at the bright side - if the fish start dying before they spawn, they’ll put up less of a fight so it makes it easier to catch ‘em.

It not a tire per se, but the rubber compounds the tire leaves on the road that washes off when it rain and runs into salmon creeks, killing coho.

How about looking at all the garbage and crap the Chinese are dumping into their rivers that empty into the Pacific Ocean?

Ya know that huge plastic ball of crap that is swirling out there?

How about looking at all that crap?

I get that.

But I live pretty close to North America’s Pole of Inaccessibility. That’s likely quite close to the pole of [Ocean] Salmon inaccessibility...

If we had flying cars by now we wouldn’t have to worry.

Too many electric cars and bicycles. That’s lots of tires.

Reminds me of the lead they used to put in gasoline. They knew it was harmful and they knew there were alternatives.

Get busy integrating an alternative anti-oxidant they probably already have developed.

I remember they couldn’t figure out why there wasn’t small piles of rubber bits at the side of the interstate from the treads wearing off. My understanding was some microbes ate them.

A couple years ago I saw a salmon swimming over the road, didn’t seem to mind one damn bit, it even asked me for directions.

Why were the salmon crossing the road?

EnvironMentalism continues to jump to conclusions and foster convulsions over anything to do with the economic advancement of transportation in the last century and righton into the 21st!!!

They will never be happy till everyone on earth returns to the starving and dismal life of savages. To them, development is defined as "any disturbance of the soil! They are dirt worshippers and should become extinct because or their terminal case of the stupids!!!

As all inlet rivers are jam packed with homeless camps in california. I would be willing to bet the raw sewage is far more of a problem than dissolving tires.

Seriously, the peanut log problem is ridiculous now. Not only are the beaches unsafe but the water is now a bio hazard.

My 2017 Chevy Equinox had Michelins manufactured in Poland and they were superb tires. The wet weather traction was amazing, and in 36,000 miles weren’t half worn. Have to say the best ones I’ve owned in 50 yrs.

Biden is gonna fix this. He is going to use all the tires Winnie Mandela style on conservatives. Two birds one stone.
