The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
You are hilarious and, may I add, one of the great blessings on FR!
Pictoral recipe - love it!
I think it was on the gardening thread where you and Liz talked about the looking glass spray paint. I did get a can. Did 2 ornaments, had to spray outside and they turned out OK. It is warmer today and I am headed out to try 2 more.
Thanks! :)
Oh, Goody! Yes, it was. Last week, I think. We get side-tracked, LOL!
I just had a bowl of that Taco Soup (had made it for the Hunters last weekend and thawed out the rest for lunch, today. It’s so good! I added crushed tortilla chips, cheese and soup cream to my bowl. I’ll eat ‘healthy’ at suppertime. ;)
I set up my Creche this morning. It’s so pretty! I hope Baby Jesus doesn’t mind being next to my Martini Bar. At least he’ll be one quiet and easy to handle baby! You’re Welcome, Mother Mary! ;)
You read my mind! Thanks for posting.
I know Advent starts tomorrow, but I wait a bit on our creche. We have a whole scene and I put it out in stages, stable, animals, plants, shepherds, Mary & Joseph, angels, baby Jesus and the the kings. Haven’t had a tree in years so this is it as far as decorations.
Thanks much for the info and link.
I planted 15 milk crates with purple coneflower last spring. Brought 10 boxes inside garage so cold weather don't kill them; hope they don't dry out. We always get some minus 65 in jan here in Fairbanks. I had friends that made their own echinachia many years back. I'm gonna try.
I usually plant Yukon golds around mothers day; can't wait.
Have you always lived in Alaska? Must be interesting gardening up there. What is your Zone?
Beau got to visit this past summer - got to see Denali on a clear day, which was really cool. They were moose hunting; saw many but none big enough to shoot.
He brought back some lovely Halibut that they caught. We’re having more of it with my family for Christmas dinner. Looking forward to that! :)
Sunny and 54 degrees today. Garlic is mulched. Cover crops planted. Will start a pot of spinach in the greenhouse sometime this week.
Had a bird get into the house somehow or other. It dug dirt out of the pot that has my tumeric in it. Finally got it to go into the greenhouse, but not sure where it went in there. I left the door open to the outdoors for a while, but it never went out that I could see.
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving—I’m eating leftovers for a few days.
That soup sounds delicious. Also glad for Eric’s chili recipe.
I like to alternate between chili and soup in the crockpot during the winter months. So I’m always looking for inspiration.
When I was in Walmart, I spotted some rosemary trees-shaped like evergreens, so I snagged one to decorate for Christmas.
I usually roto till right before mothers day, ice a foot down; but seed tatoes do well and start digging them in early august. I miss corn on the cob and good tomatoes, but luv them golds and have around 900 lb in garage. Anyway, happy holidays.
Finally did the canning I’ve been putting off.
6 half pints of jalapeno jam and 16 half pints of grape jelly from backyard pickings that I stashed in the freezer.
I used a different brand of pectin-Ball I think it was-and it seems to be working better than Sure Jell.
We got home safely from our Thanksgiving visit to my sister in Pennsylvania. Sadly, our beloved Tuxedo Kitty, Jake, passed over the Rainbow Bridge in my arms, on Friday afternoon. He was 14 and apparently had a massive infection that our quack vet ignored.
Today, I unload the box trailer and prepare to drive up to our RV site to prepare the RV for removal to our home, where I prepared the site before the Thanksgiving trip. I hope the snow holds off for a couple of weeks, so that I can clear the site.
Impressive! I complain from December through March about living on ‘The Frozen Tundra’ in Wisconsin!
Mom has a cousin that headed to AK right after High School and she never came back, either. Fairbanks area. She was an avid bear hunter, though it may have been out of necessity as she moved there in the 50’s.
I would be hard-pressed to not have fresh tomatoes and sweet corn in the summers; they’re in the Top Ten of Life’s Simple Pleasures, for sure. ;)
Your moose ‘pets’ sound very interesting! ;)
Many of us here are hoping the snow holds off for as long as it can this winter! So far, so good!
Sorry to hear about Jake. Our Tuxedo Cat is named Boyd. He’s about four years old. They’re real characters, aren’t they? A totally different kind of cat.
Hope everything goes smoothly with the RV move!
Bookmarking Taco Soup!
:D
I had some for lunch, yesterday. Crunch up tortilla chips at the bottom of your bowl and add shredded cheddar and a dollop of sour cream and avocado if you have it! :)
Cool and wet turned into warm and sunny this week in Central Missouri. Looks like more cool and wet on the way.
Thanksgiving festivities were subdued compared to most years. Two of the daughters in law are preggers, and being extra cautious with travel. The other houseful of grands all have the sniffles so they stayed home too. I smoked a 20lb bird anyway. Mrs. Augie made a big pot of collards from the garden, and we have a nice pile of leftovers to enjoy though the week.
Brought in a couple more loader buckets full of stove wood yesterday. Drained all of the garden hoses and put them away for the winter. Mrs. Augie has stowed all of her halloween decorations and is dragging out the Christmas stuff now.
Still no sign of the fall-planted garlic, but I’m sure it’s fine. There’s some garden cleanup remaining to be done. I’ll get to it one of these days.
