Is anyone on FR using a smart phone VOIP app that touts their end-to-end security? Are you happy with it?
I understand we are taking a lot of companies word on what they say they do, and I know that at least one (Wire) says all their software is open source and is reviewed (on the Apple App store the top rated commment for Wire implies its not that secure.
And Apple's FaceTime is supposedly very secure and it is built in to the Iphone and Mac, but (a) I don't trust anything coming out of Tim Cook's mouth and (b) I need a set up where an iPhone user can speak securely with an Android user.
Multiple simultaneous users or a secure text chat would be a bonus, but the most important is for as secure as possible 1-1 voice communications, so "intimate, romantic voice calls remain private."
Thanks in advance any advice.
Morse code and some crypto material. Or develope your own language or fon-speak.
Or, only use key words or phrases guaranteed to perk the “ears” of computer aided SIGINT, inundate communications circuits with this SIGINT making it moot over the short term.
Use clandestine drops...
But a secure telephone? Smoke signals maybe...
The “wickr me” app is free and does phone calls as far as I know. I’ve only had it a few weeks and haven’t really used it except to text.
BTTT
I really don’t believe Apple. They are just a single data dump to comply with government regulations.
NSA: WE HAVE EVERYTHING............................
It doesn’t matter what you use if it sends or receives an electronic signal, anywhere to anywhere.

Then you are willfully ignorant
I think I’m properly cynical. In the end, everybody complies or starves. I don’t Timmie will allow Apple to be destroyed to protect the consumer.
I have grown partial to LifeSize video conferencing.
Compared to Z**m and other video calling systems, LifeSize at least complies with secure standards.
pgp encrypted text is the most secure comms on the net.
True. The biggest thing about PGP is keeping your private key secure. I wouldn't trust having such a key on an MS-Windows computer.
If the NSA didn't actively work to keep our communications insecure, we'd have PGP-based encrypted comms everywhere by now. A public key handshake would make the handling of the session key fairly trivial, and wouldn't require much overhead. I've been using PGP since it was nothing but a DOS command line program. Wish more people knew how to actually use it.
I really don’t believe ...

It not a matter of belief.
Signal.
been using a free app from the app store for both texting and talk- works pretty well- but probably isn’t secure at all- who knows- Think it’s called Text Now or something like that- send as many texts as you want- calls are reLLy clear- only thing is you can’t use a VPN while using it- unfortunately-
The method of sharing your ID number is the important thing for maximum security. QR code or an image file of the ID number to be typed in. Such as:
56A1ADE4B65B86BCD51CC73E2CD4E542179F47959FE3E0E21B4B0ACDADE51855D34D34D37CB5
Pretty hard to crack that ID number. Do not use “toxme” to make it shorter with a proxy because it brings you right back into the traceable server environment...
I wouldn't trust having such a key on an MS-Windows computer.
Sadly 100% agree.
how do you securely share the image file or QR code?
Thank you all!
I use TextMe on Android and iOS for free texting and calls, in perpetuity it seems, but it is probably among the least secure apps available. Not a real concern to me unless comms to/from my girlfriend are of great interest to someone. Not even good blackmail material.
So the idea is rather than actually copy and pates the ID number anyhwere to share it, you take a screenshot of the number and share that image file. Bots cannot read an image file, but it can read text as it is put into text forms. So it cannot grab that ID number if it is an image rather than text. And once you have Qtox set up it gives you the option to create a one time QR code each time you need to share your ID number. Personal face to face or an image file is the best and most secure way. :)
The Tox protocol is very very secure, HOW you share your ID number is the only way it can become vulnerable. :)
