New lawsuit: Why do Android phones mysteriously exchange 260MB a month with Google via cellular data when they're not even in use?

Ad giant sued after mobile allowances eaten by hidden transfers

Google on Thursday was sued for allegedly stealing Android users' cellular data allowances though unapproved, undisclosed transmissions to the web giant's servers.

"Google’s misappropriation of Plaintiffs’ cellular data allowances through passive transfers occurs in the background, does not result from Plaintiffs’ direct engagement with Google’s apps and properties on their devices, and happens without Plaintiffs’ consent."

The device, stationary, with all apps closed, transferred data to Google about 16 times an hour, or about 389 times in 24 hours. Assuming even half of that data is outgoing, Google would receive about 4.4MB per day or 130MB per month in this manner per device subject to the same test conditions

An iPhone with Apple's Safari browser open in the background transmits only about a tenth of that amount to Apple, according to the complaint.

...Under active use, Android devices transfer about 11.6MB of data to Google servers daily, or 350MB per month, it's claimed, which is about half the amount transferred by an iPhone.

"Users often never view these pre-loaded ads, even though their cellular data was already consumed to download the ads from Google," the legal filing claims. "And because these pre-loads can count as ad impressions, Google is paid for transmitting the ads."

Why? Because Google is run and owned by a bunch of scheming rats, that’s why.

Google is run and owned by a bunch of scheming rats, that’s why.

True enough.
But the underlying reason is simply, they do it because they can.

I had an Android phone where this theft of my data got me so angry I tried to remove Google entirely. It simply rebooted itself in. Having worked as a contract worker for ATT I know if you try and jailbreak your phone, that is , you take over full control, the ATT network will no longer accept your phone.

iPhones are not innocent in this.

I recently ran a test of trying to use an old iPhone as a Hotspot to run a home network.

Much more data used as compared to an actual Hotspot device.

Yes, they can. Same reason why scheming rats get away with a lot these days. They have no opposition.

If you root it, ATT will no longer run it on its network. I don’t know what other providers do but figure they play the same game. They all subsidize their phones to make money on the monthly access.

There is a non-Google, non-Apple phone called Pinephone. It is Linux-based with open source software under no corporation’s control. It’s not ready for mainstream but is ready to play around with.

I took an Android, running Android 9, blocked all outgoing data with a firewall. With no sim card (thus no cellular data) and wifi off, the phone made 3212 outgoing data attempts to transmit my data to google’s servers. That is an attempt about every 30 seconds. What exactly, does google need all that information for? It tries to send what apps were opened, what ads were looked at, coarse location, fine location, maps information, and on and on. This is the ultimate spyware ever developed and it tries to know everywhere you go, everywhere you are, everything you do, look at, search.

What is it for? They use that data to control search order (most people never look past the first 10 results so that matters a lot), they control trending, they control search suggestions (that most people use), and what information you get to see. It is for control. It is about power. Who could have possibly guessed that 1984 would have come, and most google users love big brother so much they voluntarily give them all the intimate details of their lives.

Google is the most dangerous company and risk to your freedom that has ever existed.

I have a PinePhone. It is a linux tinkers toy at this point. It is usable but still somewhat buggy.

The Pinephone is awesome in that it tries to solve the circular problem that has existed in phones/linux for some time. There are no phones because there is no software for them, and there is no software, because there are no devices to write software for.

Now there is a device and software development continues for it. There are several OS’s that are in formal beta and work at the moment, although still somewhat buggy. Within a year there will be solid offerings that work well.

For most people, this is still not a solid alternative and it takes technical knowledge, and work, to keep it updated and functioning. Hopefully, eventually, it will be a viable alternative to google’s evil data empire and apple’s high prices.
