There is a non-Google, non-Apple phone called Pinephone. It is Linux-based with open source software under no corporation’s control. It’s not ready for mainstream but is ready to play around with.

I have a PinePhone. It is a linux tinkers toy at this point. It is usable but still somewhat buggy.

The Pinephone is awesome in that it tries to solve the circular problem that has existed in phones/linux for some time. There are no phones because there is no software for them, and there is no software, because there are no devices to write software for.

Now there is a device and software development continues for it. There are several OS’s that are in formal beta and work at the moment, although still somewhat buggy. Within a year there will be solid offerings that work well.

For most people, this is still not a solid alternative and it takes technical knowledge, and work, to keep it updated and functioning. Hopefully, eventually, it will be a viable alternative to google’s evil data empire and apple’s high prices.
